Here is my 2 cents...
The judges have to judge what is in front of them. For example, the girl at the Ironman... look at the rest of the competitors. Mind you I have met this girl and she is super sweet and rather attractive in person, but given a field with more competition at a national level show the out come could be different(the Ironman figure wasn't a national level show even though the overall winner by tradition often does very well on the national level). I know for a fact that the NPC is trying to go for a more mainstream look. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder but the NPC does want a softer, yet toned look. You can clearly tell who works out and doesn't, just like you can tell who is too hard(for what ever reason) and those who carry a softer yet toned physique. Out of respect for certain individuals I will not mention names, but I was told this... if a figure athlete even has a hint of drug use in the face then they'll be passed over. I could continue but what's the point. You guys are going to argue. Also, if a local judge has a preference for a harder look then of course they'll go for the girls who show up harder. But in reality this will hinder the direction the NPC desires to go from what I have been told. They then have to make the changes at the national level and many harder local level girls will get looked over just like the one's that show up like bikini models with no muscle and lack conditioning. It's about balance and a pretty face. Sorry guys.
Watch this pattern... the softer yet toned physiques turn pro earlier in the year and the harder girls finally get bumped up from 2nd, 3rd, 4th, to where they have a chance later in the year to turn pro because the judges are judging what's in front of them at that point again, not to mention the overall number of pro cards being rewared for figure. Sure, they turned pro, but how well will they do as a pro?
Here's an analogy... Monica Brant is the "queen", she is gorgeous! I love her look, but as long as she is standing next to Davana, Jenny Lynn, and Mary Elizabeth Lado she gets beat. Even I can't believe it at times as Monica is beautiful and has a great body, but the reality is she's not exactly the representation of what the IFBB wishes to be the absolute top figure girl. Sure some may scream politics, but if you go the route of harder then you have figure girls looking like light-weight bodybuilders competing in figure.
Remember this... it's called "Figure" for a reason. Visit
www.ifbb.com and read the definition.
We'll see how the softer Jessfit does at her pro debut at the Pittsburgh Pro May 5th. I'm sure there were many who disagreed with her turning pro... but in 3 shows and over 60 athletes in her classes she took second twice and 1st.
We hope to see some of you guys there as it is an awesome show put on by Mr. Manion. Pittsburgh is a great town and it's good venue!
