Last saturday i was doing d/b curls & i felt a pop in my left upper bicep.I dropped the d/b on my left foot.I went to the doc on monday & went in for an ultra sound & all they could see was trauma to the muscle. They couldn't tell if the tendon was torn.(i was bruised from my shoulder to my wrist).I went back to my doc & me recomends an mir.He had me move my arm in diffrent positions & he was surprised of the range of motion i had,but for the first two days i couldn't even touch my head.Right now i have little discomfort. My friggin foot hurts more. But were i injued it it is hard & a little raised. The bruising is gone in that area.I was thinking i would start training with light weights 20 rep range. Is this a bad idea or should i wait for mir.Im at work right now & i wont be home for 2 weeks.Has any body else had an injury like this, other than dropping the d/b on there foot like a dumb ass like me.Thx in advance for any input.

Why would you risk hurting it more?
Just take some time off..is it worth not being able to train for 2 weeks until you know what's up? Or not being able to train for 6 months b/c you were to bull headed and wanted to rush into things.

I would advise getting the MRI asap. If in fact you do have a complete tear then you are going to need surgery and the sooner you get it the better your chance of having a successful surgery and recovery. In other words, if it is a complete tear the tissue will retract and begin to scar down to the point where eventually it may not be able to be re-attatched. In the meantime I would not risk do anything at all until you are sure the extent of the injury.

Judgeiong from the bruising you describe you have torn something pretty badly. How badly? well this is the question. Better go and get another opinion or an MRI at least so you know the extent of the damage. DO NOT WAIT! DO NOT TRAIN IT! Just go and get it seen too.

Thanks for the input fellas.I have never had anything like this happen to me before.Would i not feel the muscle slide if it was detatched?I will get the mri but it could take a month or more where i live.I haven't even recieved a date & time for the apointment yet.Would i be able to train my lower body if i try not to put any strain on my bicep?I know squats are taxing on your entire body as well as heavy leg presses.I have to try to work around this somehow.Any ideas?

yeah i have an idea. chill out, avoid using it too much at work, and get the mri done so you know what you're dealing with. only then can we give you a proper answer to your question.

Well i guess im going to have to suck it up.As shitting as it sounds.I apreciate the advice.Thx fellas

If I were you, I'd go somewhere else to get that MRI. Waiting a month to get one sounds way too long. Not too mention going a month without knowing exactly what's wrong with you would tear me up mentally as well.

Agreed. Waiting too long for surgery is a bad idea as well because your body will try to heal itself on it's own and it could repair your bicep tendon on it's own but in the wrong way where you permanently lose some range of motion and will never have as much strength in that arm as your good arm. Something to think about.

Ive never heard of a bicep tear with dumbells before--only the barbell and preacher curl....can i ask you if you were cheat curling dumbells that normally would be too heavy for you or if you had injured that bicep prior on back movements or straight bar curls

that is a nice bit of info for everyone to know. I knew that dumbell curls were safer, but not that much. So it really is much more difficult to injure a bicep and its tendon when doing dumbells?

i'm no expert, but it seems as though it would be based upon the fact that you are not "locked" into a certain position with db's

same here, doing preacher curls , felt some shit in my shoulder, and now i got a bicep tendon rupture. no insurance. im fucked. but u can, and should get an mri. probably just a tear, tho. but be safe!

Exactly what I was thinking.....

Yes,that rep was a cheat rep,but not a cheat set.I have strained my lower bicep before & my left rotator before. What gets me is those strains were more painfull & lasted longer than this injury. But there is a bit of avoid in my upper left bicep when i compare it to my right.I will get the mri as soon as i can.Thx agian fellas for all your input

Yeah, but I didnt think an injury using dumbells would be that rare that he has never seen one.

how do i put a pic on this site, which j peg do i use

You should come to Canada man and get it done for free.

Ive seen pec tears with 99.9% of them done on flat bench barbell presses and only 2 (out of 100's) done on incline barbell presses...one by a canadian champion and one by Noel Fuller. Bicep tears Ive only seen it done on reverse grip bent over rows, barbell curls, and preacher curls....but the majority of them were done when lifting odd objects.....TV's, flat benches, and the bigtime culprit "helping a friend move"....Ive seen more people tear biceps from "helping their friends move" than just about anything.
Hamstring tears Ive heard/seen on standing leg curl and deadlifts. Tricep tears= nose crushers, and barbell bench presses surprisingly. Lat tears.....seen it in T-bar rows with both Ronnie and Branch Warren and his training partner....otherwise its usually a weird movement (wrestlers like Bautista and MMA guys) that does it. Calf tears Ive seen while guys playing basketball or jumping in a pool....thats just a random event also. Ive never heard of a calf tear by someone actually training calves. Quad tears = squats and hacks and leg presses.....just bad luck on that day.
I do remember one guy back in the day on bb.com saying he tore his pec on dumbell presses but I really cant remember many ever saying they tore something with a dumbell movement....this I think is the second one Ive heard of.

there is no better proof of something than just plain old experience IMO. What you have witnessed over the years really does reveal just how much more natural dumbells are, and certain movements for that matter. Lots of those lifts you mention I have either had strains or the movement just plain felt bad. I do think that a movement needs to follow a more natural arc of motion. I once tore my brachioradials badly doing reverse barbell curls. THe nerve that runs through there to this day is still damaged. Just a really unnatural movement.
LOL, yeah helping friends move is a good way to get injured. Ive had a few myself doing that, but nothing serious. heck, some of the most painful muscle strains ive gotten are just getting out of bed the wrong way or twising a funny way while doing something around the house. Most of these injuries I think are from being stiff from lifting. Had the biceps sore enough before that it hurts to extend the arm all of the way out. Probably a good sign I was overtraining at the time. I can see how its easy to tear something when its that stiff.
