I was just saying I am glad I don't have a TV these days and Aaron was saying even though he doesn't watch much he still has to cough up money for the public TV police here in Japan.

I only pay then because when I first moved here in 2007, I didn't know any better (signed up for automagic bank account payments).

I figure if I ever want to run for public office here in the far future, it would look good on my record that I have been paying NHK since day one.

Out of all my friends and coworkers, I'm the only one who actually pays (LOL).

People in Japan are 'required' to contribute to the public television fund.
They will send out collectors who will harass you until you cough up the dough.

Whenever you buy a TV in a department store the store notifies NHK and they will come knocking sooner or later...

Why wouldn't the Japanese fed gov just put aside the required funds for pub tv out of the general budget? I mean, how much money is wasted paying the salaries of the tv fund collectors? You'd think directly paying the funds out of the general budget would be cheaper...

They don't think like that here.

It takes about 5 people to fix a streetlight here (one guy to hold the ladder, one guy to actually climb it and fix it, and three (older) guys standing around it directing car and people traffic).
