i don't understand how you can lose quad activity by squating deeper

it just moves to the hammys and glutes once below parallel....

but its eases in and out of it....instead of the abrupt stop and change
from not going deep enough, or box sqts..

I find parallel or just below it to be best. I like an only pic squat stance as well as opposed to a powerlifter stance squat

Wide and parallel Westside barbell style but then again my legs are a dominant body part for me so I don't need much size anymore. It does work though, quads and hams get complimented all the time. I never go in the bucket unless I'm warming up...

My quads have actually started to respond since I retained how to do ass-to-ground a few years ago.

My quads and hammys responded better to ass to grass.. but I forgot to write a research and publish it. I'll say 10.3% increase in mass.

Dexter Jackson have mentioned in one of his new videos that he doesn't go below parallel due to age and dry knee joints and his quads never looked better- Dexter Jackson

Definetly get a better pump in my overall legs when bottoming out.

Upper quads going towards my abdominal region get more pumped than just stopping at parallel.

I like to do front squats with lighter weights deep in the hole. I'll take 225 and do for 20 reps at the end of my workout going all the way down it fries my quads much more than just normal front squats

I’m thinking spine

not going to the ground INCREASES knee stress...

T,

Don’t know what ‘kind’ of box squats you are referring to,
but the one where the person actually sits / rests on the box,
not just touches the box, are the worst of the lot.

Can you imagine what that must do to your spine when you
sit like that, letting your spine support the weight. All that
compression on your disks? (Not distributed through your
musculature like in a normal squat.) I’m no mechanical
engineer but that just can’t be beneficial, is just downright
dangerous and crazy in my opinion.

Like they say . . . you can pay me now or you can pay me later
. . . which in this case, later may be too late.

Just my 0.02 cents worth.

And by the way, I have a love hate relationship with squats.
Properly performed, there is nothing better for the legs, IMO.
(Was it you who did the 10 x 10 squat routine with very
little rest between sets? Wow.) I hate doing them because they
are so damn hard, but love what limited results I have had
by doing them, when I could.

I’m a high rep guy when it comes to squats . . . 20 – 50
reps, always breaking parallel. No can do heavy. Never could.
My hips and low back would talk to me, and not in nice way,
the next day, and the next day, and the next day . . .

A little bit of elevation for my heals helps a bunch but there
is only so much one can do. I envy the guys that squat like
piston in a cylinder, straight up and down, not all bent over
like me. Oh well.

Good topic.

Ive always gone all the way down to the floor and my legs have always been good. Im so used to doing them this way I like it, I can stop short of going all the way down, I like going down quite slow .

I saw that Dexter and Kia train together video where Dexter said its not needed to go all the way down.

Charles Glass also changed Dexter's training split last year so he has a totally seperate hamstring and glute day, so he really isn't trying to hit those when he squats on quad day.

I can't even fathom an "ass to grass" squat.

I'm 6'2, fuck that jazz. My joints would be destroyed in a few years.

How many of you going ass to grass are over 6'0 230lbs?

I agree on the box squats, but for someone with longer legs in proportion to their torso and tall going to the ground causes much more stress than parallel.

Different approaches to lifts differ with each persons structure and size/height. It's not 1 size fits all.

No squat are pointless un ess your a suited lifter and then they probably do very little of anything. No raw lifters do them.

It's harder for me to not go deep because it's hard to stop. I have been making an effort to go no lower than parralel.

I was just gonna say....

guys with longer femurs have a severe disadvantage
and shouldn't even do squats imo...

the whole biomechanics thing comes into play
