Keeping midsection small and strong

Hello all,

I have just started my first cycle and I want to keep my midsection small, but I also want to keep it strong.

I heard that if you work your midsection while bulking it will lead to a good amount of hypertrophy in that area and that is not what I want. I do want to keep my midsection strong though as I am an athlete.

Does anyone have any suggestions for how I should accomplish this?

I was thinking of maybe doing low reps of the midsection exercises, and not doing them often. I've heard that some bodybuilders use belts for almost everything in order to keep their midsection small but I would not be willing to compromise overall strength in such a way.

Any feedback is appreciated.

Always keep your waist "tight", IOW flexed, while doing any work. (even bicep curls)

Don't go insanely heavy on exercises like squats that put pressure on the abdomen (ever seen powerlifters with their bellybutton sticking out? pressure!)
Go with leg press for heaviest set, then squats for lighter weight.

I never train my abs specifically. I know Dexter J. doesn't either.
They get enough work as stabilizers in squats and deadlifts IMO. (not using a belt.. can't handle the weight without one? lower it!)
^But everyone's different, some don't need forearm work, I do.. so do what you need to do.

I will follow definately follow this suggestion. A strong core is so important for athletics though. I was thinking that I am probably going to do my ab exercises when I am cutting as it won't cause substantial growth.

Does this sound like a good idea or should I avoid them altogether?
 
I do all exercises standing when possible and do no direct ab work, when I want abs I just drop bodyfat and there they are
