When I was younger I was involved in martail arts. I was thinking about starting back up and useing it is as a cardio program. What do you guys think of this idea?

there are a couple guys on this forum that take MMA very serious so i'm sure they would agree with me that it is a good idea. regular cardio on a bike or treadmill is boring, why not have fun while doing it. good luck

Best cardio WO on the planet!

Get into MMA(mixed martial arts), BBJ, MT kickboxing, Submission wrestling. It will get you in the best shape of your life, IF you can take it and desire to excel in it.

I would have to say if you don't like getting hit submission wrestling would be the way to go.

Tapout1

Look around and find somthing you can enjoy. Their is no conditioning like going one on one, wheather its wrestling or on yer feet!

Most guys drop out of MMA...

...because of ego issues. People don't want to get their ass kicked day in day out. I started BJJ after years of Thai boxing, shootfighting, Kung Fu and various other styles. My teacher is all of 170lbs and litterally kicked my ass all over the place. I am the only 310lb guy he has ever taught one on one and I can't move like guys half my size but, it is all about learning it ALL. The best workouts are MMA workouts. I train for 2-3 times a week and train at gym 4 days a week and hit back 3-4 times a week and that just KILLS ME!!

I wrote up a thread over at undergroundbodybuilding with some details on 'interval training'.... That is real endurance training. And going mixed is the best way to go. Learn the ground and how to strike and also some good 'in fighting' skills. It is a lot on the joints and back if you have any of those problems. Muay Thai kickboxing, with some type of ground fighting is a good mix.

I agree with all you guys. I practiced Kung fu and kenpo for 12 years along with BB and it was the best choice as I didn't need to kill myself doing extra cardio. I recently started Muai Thai and Kali (stickfighting) And my abs and lats are in the best shape (they are pumped and sore all the time, and I constantly have muscular separation) I sweat alot more than doing my regular cardio at the gym. And is the best for endurance. I don't get as exhausted between sets for example doing squats. I'm 255 right now, not dieting (just eating good).

Dieselman.

Thanks for the info bro's. I want to try some akido(sp) and/or kickboxing. Anyone know of a good school in the maryland area?

I´ve done Jiujitsu for 7 years and it´s all good. I love freestyle MMA competitions, ground and pound baby!

so is there a particular discipline ....

So is there a particular style that with in MMA that would provide the most cardiovascular work? or are there several that are similar?

I took kickboxing for a little while last summer (had to drop out when school started) but it was hard as fucking hell. Definetly the best cardio workout you can get, one thing that I hated about it was the fact that all my lifts went down since between that and powerlifting I was simply overtraining. Id like to start back up sometime in the future when Im willing to accept the loss in strength.

Its a great workout - I trained for about 12 years and a few styles.

My kids are old enough to get into it now so I might start up again.

cardio and martial arts

So kick boxing is the most cardio orientated or are there others?

Well, I really have no frame of referance since it is the only fighting style I have ever taken, but like I said it was intense!

iam a wrestler myself free style now. There is nothing like it is all i will say. Every one has a differnt name for it but the drill in which u have 6 guys one out on the mat and every guy gets one minute to try to either score or pin u. Trust me it doesnt seem like much time but 20 mins of that style of drill takes more out of me than running 10 miles

EXACTLY....

This drill is called "Ironman" and I did this drill 4X a week when I was training full blast. THERE IS NO COMPARISON. You will be lucky to drag yourself to the showers.

Fatigue will cause your worse fears to come true!!

To be in situation where you have no energy left in fight is worst thing so those drills will help you better your stamina.
