I too was a Marine and can tell you, the Marines is not good for building mass/muscle. When I was in the service I came out boot camp weighing 148 pounds at 5-9. My waist was 28 inches. I could run 10 miles without hardly sweating but my strength was gone, replaced by marathon runner endurance.
After I got out into the fleet, I started lifting and went up to 190 pretty quick, now I am at 235, but that has been 15 years since I got out.
There were times when I would get up to 190 and then have to go off on a 3 month training session in the desert and bam, there goes 25 pounds of mass pretty quick eating 2 - 3 shitty meals and humping a 90 pound pack for 20+ miles per day.
