ok, here's the deal. My brother went into the doctor with some symptoms, adbominal pain, etc. So the doc tells him he has an enflamed liver, high iron content and high blood volume. From the research I did this could possibly be caused by a high iron diet (red meat, whole grains) and the high blood volume is an issue with endurance training, but I didn't find anything on strength training. Can anyone shed any light on how these symptoms could be caused by a bbing lifestyle, training, diet and supps included?

this may be an out there question but could be important....

if he's a hardcore endurance athlete, he may blood dope..... if he's done that def. will affect his hemo..... people have died from it

other than that, is he on any gear???

he's been off for about 5 weeks. He's been cycling consistently for the past 2 years. He's going to a specialist about his liver and he'll talk to the doc about what he does dietwise and supp wise, but I'm curious if this is common.

As far as blood doping, the high blood volume keeps your heart rate down during strenuous exercise, this is why endurance athletes blood dope.

I'm worried about him because he is my brother and I would like to keep my fellow bbers aware of the risks we all take in this game.

yeah, i hear ya

the doping also increases the blood volume cuz you have more RBCs so the blood is thicker.... it creates more peripheral resistance in the vascular system making the heart work harded...

i'm not sure what supps would beat up his liver besides 17aa AAS

yeah, we always use anadrol for the first four weeks, but only 50mgs a day. All his doses are moderate, I tell him what to take and when to take it, so I have knowledge of his supplementation. I'm defintely thinking the iron is diet related and the inflamed liver is caused by his iron levels. The blood part has me confused.

well hemoglobin has iron in it, that's why the rbc's are red... the iron.... i think its iron ferrite or something like that.... shit, i should have paid more attention... but it could all be related.... if he's eating high iron and taking stuff to produce more RBCs then yeah, his hemo is gonna be high... and liver could be from 17aa's...

where's DrGoodbody ???

help a brotha out.... im on medicine and cant even remember to wipe my own butt let alone remember physiology

The increase in blood volume could be caused by the liver problems. The liver degrades vasopressin/ADH (which regulates water volume in the body) and aldosterone (which regulates sodium in the body). If either one of these is left around too long, an increase in blood volume could result.

Also, yes, the increase in iron may have caused the liver problems. I'm not saying that this is definitly the cause, but it's within the realm of possibility. Hope your brother is alright.

i would assume it would be reversible.... liver is pretty tough and can regenerate to a degree....

hope all goes well

Possibly...

There may be a viral infection taking place as well.
Your doc will need to do a travel history, as well as drug history. High iron levels may indicate hemochromatosis, but this would be a long shot, and would have shown up much earlier in life. Iron intake form food would also be a long shot. The question then would be: Why would dietary iron not be handled propery by the liver?

Usually the inital culprits are either infection of some sort, drug reaction, or idiopathic (meaning who the hell knows why).

Most liver problem diagnosis relies heavily on LFT's - I'm assumming this has been done.

Best wishes to your brother for a speedy recovery!
