I saw an interview with him just hours after the crash. He said once he was cleared from the hospital, he wanted to get back with his team at the track. He said he was fine and he kept it in his mind that the car would stop flipping eventually. He did say the car did a few more turns than he thought was possible though.

The main reason he wanted to get back to the track: to show his team he was okay, so they would focus on getting the backup car ready. Because he had enough owner points to qualify 40th for Sunday's race anyways, and he will be racing!

It just amazes me that he hit the wall that hard and walked away but you look at Dale Earnhardts wreck and he died. The hit he made was nothing compared to this one. RIP Dale!

i know after earnhardt died they made the drivers wear that new harness that protected their necks/heads from snapping maybe this saved him?

Anyways, looks like there was a bit of smoke right before the tires broke loose and he started to spin, anyone know for sure what happened?

That was speedy dry on the track from an earlier incident. Other drivers said it was still a bit slick there.

I'd say he definitely chose the wrong corner to overcorrect on the steering....hahaha.... wow. what a crash. Slingshot straight into the wall.
Man, Nascar has really come a long way in the engineering of these cars. The driver cockpit looked in great shape for such a high speed impact. Very impressive.
The head restraint device you guys are talking about is the Hans Device. Keeps the head from whiplashing in an accident and was used in other forms of motorsports prior to Nascar adopting it. There just is no controling your head in crashes... I've gone round corners at over 1.5g's and my head bobbles all over the place without even realizing it... hahaha

A huge credit to NASCAR's engineers for the safety advancements. I knew Busch driver Blaise Alexander personally, and it just makes me wish those improvements were around when he got killed. Dale Sr. would still be with us too.
