Ever since I started squatting my glutes and hams just seem to grow!Before I got sick last year I was going pretty heavy and now that I started them again my strength is going up fast.

Problem is Im relatively thick top to bottom so I want to minimize that look.Id like to keep the thickness in my upper body and quads,but eliminate the blocky look in the midsection.Having big glutes does not help.

What can I substitute for squats that will keep the focus on my quads and remove some mass from the rear,keeping everything tight and toned?

I started squatting with Ironman83 way back when so he taught me the powerlifting style which I still employ and am most comfortable with.I am just not built for narrow squatting like alot of guys I see.My flexibility does not allow it,so I need to go wide and I believe that is the problem.

How about hack squats or leq press?
 
Ahhh, BN is self conscious about his buns. I never thought this day would come.:D Just start moving your stance in a little at a time so you avoid injury. The thing is, some people just have bigger butt's. I do and I'm proud of it!

If you do hacks start out light for higher reps. They were always hard on my knees. Leg presses same thing until you get the feel for them. Just start adding them in after squats for a couple of sets.

well that powerlifting stance hits the glutes big time.

why can't you go narrow? just use less weight.

If you already have the quad mass and just want to maintain it then doing only leg extensions would be an idea. Just throw a squat/leg press workout in there every now and then. Its probably the best way to go, at least for the time being, if you want to try to shrink your ass and lose a little bit of blockiness in the waiste.
 
Hey bro-leg presses w/ the feet low on the platform and fairly narrow, hacks kill my lower back so I don't do them. Smith machine squats with a narrow stance w/ your feet alittle further out in front hit the quads pretty well. My favorite though(but tough) is front squats w/ a narrow stance(nothing crazy)-I do these w/ a barbell but I've seen them done on the smith also. My ass gets out of hand fast w/ wide stance squats too-You could try narrowing your stance and placing the barbell higher up on the traps(instead of upper-mid back).

Conan,I am very unstable if I go narrow.I just don't feel right and I start to tilt forward a bit.My hams must be tight.

Manboy,your right.The bar is right on my rear delts,lower traps.Its the only way I feel comfortable and safe squatting.I see guys with the bar high up and I cringe.

All I want to do is eliminate the blockiness.Squats make me to thick in the middle.Ironman83 is a pure powerlifter and his ass and midsection are thick as hell.Thats great for the powerlifting which he is great at,but its not pretty enough for me.I want to be pretty dammit!!!:D
 
well if you feel unstable you are probably going too heavy?

try putting 5 lb plates under your heals and focus on keeping the weight back on the heals instead instead of in the front portion of your feet.

The way guys used to minimize that look back in the day was to not go too deep on their squats, use hack squats and rely on alot of leg extensions

once your ass, midsection has grown it will maintain that muscle even if you give it a little bit of stimulation.

The best thing to do is rely on alot of leg extensions (for now) b/c there is no glute involvement there or abdominal strain.

When ever you do your squats, use 15 reps atleast,don't go too low, and dont lock your knees too much at the top. When you do the low reps or heavy straining/really baring down in general (even on high reps,but not as much) is when those stomach muscles start coming into play that will give you that more blocky waist.

You'll always be pretty in my eyes sunshine :p

What everyone else said really. No magic, just vary it around until you adjust. Start with legg press - feet narrow, low on plate. Move to leg xtensions then lighter weight squats with a narrower stance. You'll know it when you get it right so just switch things up a bit until you get in the groove.

I know what you mean though - I've seen some dudes build some damned HUGE bubble-butts at times! :D IronMike

PS - are you a bubble-butt now pretty? :p

Haven't had a drink in a while old timer, pretty much given the bottle away. Right now I've got fricking pneumonia though so I might be going a little mad, as I'm confined inside for the fourth day with no exercise, shrinking more by the hour.... apart from that life is pretty good mate. Hopefully things continue to look up for you too brother and for your loved ones. Sounds like they are, except for the butt of course :p IronMike
 
You don;'t have to bring your feet into a "narrow" stance, jsut bring them in closer. Like shoulder width or so. Due to the fact that you don't want to hit glutes as much, you can just do shallow squats, going down only to just above parallel and keeping all the tension on the quads and then back up, but not locking out completely, this will keep constant stress on JUST the quads. If you still feel unstable with teh shortened range of motion (which you shouldn't....you big clumsy bastard) then put 5lbers under your heels like the others said.
 
Diet down... Yes your glutes can be big, but all men put a thick layer of fat there. Get down to 10% and you will have a nice narrow ass. Don't post pics though, this thread could get real gay real quick.
 
i agree with conan, go in narrow, it takes time and practice but you can do it, powerlifting style squats will def. hypertrophy the glutes. as far as exercise choices, belt squats can work well and what about front squats?

Fronts

I like fronts,just have not done them in awhile.I stopped doing them because I had a problem with my left AC joint and the pressure of resting the bar on the delt/bi tie in caused major pain.But now it feels better, will give it a shot with light weight.

more impact on quads

Front squats hit the quads hard due to bar being farther forward. Takes awhile to get the shoulders used to having a bar sit on them but front squats hit the quads more than glutes and hams as in regular squats.
 
Yea BN, fronts to parrallel and hacks. Try lighter weight higher reps. Your gonna miss that big ass when you fall down and don't have no pillows to fall back on though!!!HAHAHA. Besides who the fuck is gonna tell you, you have a big ass!! NOT ME bro, not me! Try doing weighted step ups. They will burn the quads without too much glute action, same again do reps instesd of weight. But I still think fronts will be the best option. Hacks with a narrow stance will enhance quad sweep and take the focus of your big ass!!:eek: Did I just say that!!!:eek: Let us know how you go big boy:p
