O/T high school football and sportsmanship

i am tired of hearing these shitty teams getting their asses kicked then whining about it because they suck! when i was in high school we beat a team 97-0. i didnt get to catch one single pass and we never threw the ball at all! we played JV and Freshman the entire 2nd half and ran the ball every play. if the other sucks so bad that they cant beat a JV team then the hell with them. we were up 72-0 at halftime-we were in disbelief in the locker room. i just remember being pissed off because i didnt get play at all and didnt get to return any kicks besides the kickoff which i ran back 83yds for a TD

point is that if you get your ass kicked you have no one to blame but yourselves! i suggest they work harder in the off season and get better! JMO

yeah i read about that in CT they are making it against the rules to blow teams out by 50 plus points...ppl grow through adversity there is nothing wrong with getting your ass handed to you every now and then

yea its a sport that we need to use to teach our kids about good sprtsmanship , but part of that is learning how to loose! yea it sucks to see a bunch of kids get the shit stompped out of them , but it is a learning eventand some people need that before the go out into life

we as a socity are becoming bigger and bigger pussys , i like to call this the pussification of America and its only gonna get worse

i remember being up on a team in college at half time something like 68-7 (basketball) and the coach said if they scored 20 we had to run a shit ton during pratice the next day we won something like 115-23.. We ran... A LOT.. Athletes should be programmed to beat the hell out of the other team. We are all men in sports... If you dont like the chance of getting beat or hurt DONT PLAY!!

This is no longer true...the new rule is if a team is up by 35 or more points at any time in the game there will be a continuous clock as long as they maintain that lead...for Iowa anyway

You get beat bad, you get beat bad. Simple as that. Suck it up and get better. How do you get better? Shut the fuck up and practice, which is exactly what I told my JV team after a 57-0 ass pounding. "But coach they are D4, we're D6."

Anyone who complained after the game ran a mile for every touchdown given up (in other words, they ran their ass off). Sure enough, when we called for a JV O or D during practice, we had 20 kids running out instead of 5. We got better real fast.

I played shit squad against the seniors my entire freshman year. Mr. Football was our running back. Get the shit beat out of me? FUCK YEAH! Ever shy away from a hard hit or tackle again? FUCK NO! You learn by playing, not watching. And for God's sake hit the weights.....this team this year is so small and weak it is pathetic. Our strongest kid barely benches 350 and squats 315. Also a sophomore.

I agree 100%. I've been on both sides of the ass whippins. Sometimes it's good to get humbled...

I think it depends on the age of the players. I coach youth baseball, football, and basketball and don't see the point to hugely lopsided scores other than making the kids that may not be fortunate enough to be on a talented team learn to hate the sport. "Courtesy" rules have their place in youth sports. Plus the kids love the chance to play other positions once we are up a bunch.

Once you get to Jr High/High school level, well then all's fair, deal with the cards you are dealt.

One thing I absolutely HATE that we do in youth sports here is not keep official score in baseball and basketball until 10 yoa. I can't stand that. First off, there isn't a damn kid in the game that doesn't know what the score is whether we keep it or not. Second, I really believe you can't teach someone to win unless you teach them to lose. It goes hand in hand.

Shielding kids from failure is one of the worst "progressions" we've made in our society.

IMO its one thing to win by a lopsided margin, its another thing to win by a lopsided margin and talk shit and make an active effort to humiliate the other team...its not like they dont already know they got their shit rocked and feel embarassed about it and thats where i think sportsmanship comes into play, you can beat the shit out of another team, but you dont need to rub their noses in it or what have you, you can win by 70 points and still show respect to the other team's players. but as far as having a wide margin victory, hey, just cause youre winning doesnt mean you shouldnt get to continue playing the game and the goal of playing is scoring so...

I can feel you. I remember being on the bad side of that situation and I just sucked it up and kept palying. I don't remember it being that bad but the final score was 50-0. The funny thing is that the defense only gave 2 touchdowns. BTW, was this topic started due to this article:

No dodgeball these days in gym?

I am pretty sure that most schools stopped letting kids play dodgeball in gym class. Am I right? I think that is pretty pathetic too, and this thread reminded me of that. They are so scared a kid might get humuliated, feelings hurt. I think it is all just part of growing up. I always looked forward to dodge ball and think its a shame they dont play it anymore.
Anyone think of other ways things have changed in school sports?

All the punkasses I decapitated in high school PE Dodgeball became cops. Go figure??? Back to PE Dodgeball 2009. My bro is a high school teacher and he still has his class play dodgeball, but get this. The athletic director of the school requires a modification of the rules. Throwing a headshot gets you disqualified(a move that gained you great respect or fear by your class back in the day). Also anyone hit by a ball or that throws a ball caught by the other team is no longer "out" they just switch to playing for the opposing team when hit. How retarded is that???

I also hate how little league teams all get trophies instead of just the champs now. Trophies should be earned. These kids are growing up with this false sense of entitlement that will prevent them from working harder towards achieving their goals in life. I truly fear for this generation and future ones. Everyone wants everything yesterday and they don't want to work for it either.

if they dont want to be embarassed or have someone talk shit to them then i suggest they work harder in the off season. i dont buy the whole argument of being "fair". wtf is that. is business fair? going to jail for improving your body fair? that teacher giving you an F fair? why does everything have to be fair? need to teach kids to buck up and work hard. if you get your ass kicked then you need to work harder and never give up. pussification of this country is one reason we are declining!

i was thinking about that article as i was reading this thread. its ridiculous how a person who takes a knee instead of scoring a touchdown can get a front page spot on yahoo (at least this is where i saw it published).

i'm sick of these teams who get upset when they get beat really badly. like that girls bball coach in i think texas who got fired for beating the other team like 103 to 0, something like that.

it's this whole "all kids are special" thing which really gets out of hand. people need to accept that their kids aren't all the best and if they get beaten they get beaten. there should be no "12th winner" out of 12 people, its ridiculous. i have taken some physical education classes in college and have learned that the new curriculum now for PE classes and they have almost completely eliminated any "competitive games" and have gone to these games where there is no winner or loser and the students can dictate how well they do and no matter what they do, the teacher is told that they have to tell the students that they are winners.

Man o man. We wonder why the kids in our country are not ready anymore to compete in the world economy. All of the competition and reality of the real world is being taken out of school so that kids dont learn about it till its too late when they are adults.

As a teacher in high school I use to see a lot of this going on. In my class I made sure to never ridicule or put up with it in my class, but I never praised a student for not achieving something. Of course the goals for some are set much lower than others but the student still has to work hard to get the praise. Empty praise is meaningless, and kids know it too. I think empty praise does more harm than none.

i agree that fairness rarely manifests itself in life and that is a valuable thing which everyone has to learn at some point, but to assume that those teams you beat the shit out of didnt work hard in their offseason is sort of ridiculous to me..i guarantee those teams worked thru the same shitty ass schedule of two a days, long practice hours and having to deal with their coursework at the same time..and talent is unquestionably unevenly distributed, until teams start to recruit etc.
