I grew up with heavy metal rock(hair bands like skid row, slaughter, def leppard, warrant, ratt, etc..) and there is something about the electric guitar that has always fascinated me. I have always talked about learning how to play the electric guitar but have never done anything about it because I am completely music illiterate and have never known how or where to get started. Does anybody know of any methods where I can learn to play the electric guitar, yet do it in the privacy of my own home and at my own pace? I see shit on the internet about DVD's, internet course, books, etc... but would like to get some feedback before wasting money on something that is trash. Any recommendations are greatky welcomed.

Funny yuo should bring this up, I'm doing the same after not having played for, well, more (way more!) than a decade.

You'll get a GREAT start with Fretboard Logic. Two books and a DVD that will teach yuo a TON of theory the easy way, and get yuo moving around the fretboard.

Then there's Lucidguitar.com - a 16 DVD set that starts from the beginning.

Then there's note4note.us for learning music (Page, Hendrix, Allman, Beck, etc) literally note for note, demonstrated on DVD. Better to do this once yuo've got the basics of chords, barre chords, scales (chromatic, pentatonic, etc). Note4note also has DVD's on lead playing and slide guitar, too.

I've shuffled through a lot of the stuff on ebay, etc, and these seem to be truly the best after a year of goofing around with all this.

Hope this helps...

There is always Guitar Hero for Playstation ..LOL .. I play Bass and Guitar and it is great for stress relief but sometimes causes alot of stress as well... The DVD's mentioned above sound like a good start and all the tabs you could ever want are free on the internet now days ... good luck!

I love that game. I think there is a book simply titled "Teach yourself to play guitar" that I have heard of several people using with success.

Since you're beginning, I'd say take a look at Frank Gambale videos on youtube and see if his Sweep Picking technique seems like a good idea. It's not for everyone, but if you learn it you'll be able to play very fast and effortlessly. Also, google fret2fret.

Good luck.

Check if you like his style:

Very cool, Allex!

Looks like he's playing a Jackson. After years of thinking I wanted a Les Paul or Strat, I played some Ibanez RG's and a Jackson recently. I need something with a wider neck that's thinner (if that makes sense) since I have shorter fingers, yet somewhat wide finger pads.

That's a Frank Gambale model Ibanez. I used to have one of those, very nice guitars. Have you tried a Gibson, PRS or Baker?

Been out of the loop for so long - not sure what PRS or Baker is, can yuo tell me a bit about these?

I had a Gibson ES-335, black with Humbuckers, and Grover heads - bought it in '73 for $150, then sold it in '75 to finance chasing some chick I thought I was in love with across the country (stupid!!!). Don't regret losing her, but, damn, I wish I'd kept that guitar (sigh...).

PRS stands for "Paul Reed Smith" and it's Santana's guitar. You probably can find Baker guitars at http://www.edroman.com/
BTW, nice guy to talk to, maybe the one you should ask about the string spacing you're looking for.
Not sure if you know, but a 1973 ES-335 is going for 5 or 6 grand these days.

look for books and audio cds from a guy called troy stetina (i think that's his name)... if you want to learn rythem and lead methods starting from extreme beginner to playing like yngwie malmsteen, he's the man!

play guitar

it is a good idea to recommend the frank gambale song
he only needs 30000 dollars for equipment and 15 years learning to see that he cannot play like him

Well, I've been a professional musician for 20 years, and if I played electric guitar I'd love to have started with sweep picking. It's not THAT difficult, it's actually easier once you get it. Gets tougher when you already know traditional picking. Do you play guitar?
BTW, nice user's name...

Allex - really apprecitate the tips and help!

Now that I know yuo're a pro, I'm going to bug yuo mercilessly for tips, questions on technique, and well, just about everything, LOL!

Have a great Thanksgiving,
Dad

Oh, and thanks for rubbing it in about how much my guitar is now worth - my music teacher said 10K, (arrgghhh...,but LOL!)
