I heard about it on SHR show. Sounds pretty good, esp. for bodybuilding. LBA and Beef isolate would fit in pretty good too IMO.

yea it's a great diet. just meat, veggies and fruit. no dairy, no grains, no sugar. easy to follow.

I have the book but never tried following it to a T.

Im gonna do it for 14 weeks with the only changes being the use of LBA's, beef isolate and ALRI Chained out. I will do fortnightly updates. I am 265lb and 16%bf. Trying to get down to 220lb and 9%:)

So you're trying to lose about 20 pounds of muscle?

I like Lyle McDonald's rant on paleo man:

there is some evidence in that respect, yes. Certainly chronic hyperinsulinemia as occurs with teh combination of modern diet + inactivity does bad things. So fine, if you want to talk about the average modern person, perhaps paleo diet would be better than a 64 oz coke every day. No joke.

Of course they also have done no activity since 1992 and the paleo people alwys focus on the diet alone and ignore the OTHER apsects of supposed paleo man's life that contributed. Christ, why am I bothering typing this all up again, I've already discussed this with bitsobrawn and gareth even if they were both too dumb to pay attention.

I thought we were talking about bodybuilders and grains....becuase regular activity affects insulin sensitivity and release. And few athletes eat the kinds of foods endemic to the modern diet.

And grains aren't evil in any case. As dozens and dozens of studies say. But I'm not typing up that again either. Without the development of grains, humanity never would have evolved. Of course it's easy to be paleo man when you can go to Wild oats and buy your food. I want these paleo extremists to do it right: get off the computer (Paleo man didn't have it), toss your glasses (paleo man didn't have it), get rid of your car (paleo man didn't have them). Go live in teh woods and do it right or shut the hell up about it. Dont pick and choose the easy aspects of living a paleo life. Because that's all that any of them are doing.

Of course they won't, they are just a bunch of rich Americans who get to make inane choices about their food intake (like vegetarians) because they live in a world that WOULD NOT EXIST IF MAN HADN'T STOPPED BEING A HUNTER GATHERER AND DOMESTICATED GRAINS IN THE FIRST PLACE.

Of course, it's fun to watch the paleo guys quite Cordain and Eaton's SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH ARTICLES but choose to ignore the ones on grains because they don't like what they say.

Oh yeah, paleo guys: move out of your house and go build a hut.

No more medicine either, if you get sick good luck with that. Go figure out which herbs are good for certain things.

Quit your gym, paleo man didn't have rotating barbells and weights. Go lift rocks and antelopes for exercise. When you aren't spending 4 hours/day trying to obtain food by hand.

No supplements either. No creatine, no none of that. If you want fish oils, learn to spear hunt.

Oh yeah, and please drop dead at age 40 since that's about average life expectancy for paleo man. Don't rely on the medical technology that wouldn't exist if man hadn't domesticated grains and been able to put energy into more than survival because paleo man didn't get to either.

But stop picking and choosing which bits you do and do not think are valid.

As far as fruit goes on the diet, the best way to utilize them is pre and post workout...Temperate fruits are best they tend to be lower GI (apples, citrus, etc). 45% protein, 30% fat and 25% Cho.

What about Lyle's account did you like. I thought that it lacked logic and was indicative of a closed mind and condescending attitude, hardly admirable attributes for someone trying to learn about nutrition and exercise science.:(

Agreed

are you sure these numbers are right?

45lb loss to take you down to 9% ????

are you really sure?

You're gonna be hitting a lot of muscle with that

And Lyle's scientific credentials wuold be...?

**broken link removed**

Hes a writer on nutritition, not a researcher but has looked at the science. His books are very scientifically detailed. Either way, its a rant, not a scientific article.

Im not sure where you see the lack of logic. He said the paleo diet was better than eating junk, but that the 'hyperinsulin' argument that paleo people talk about is over blown and not really relevant to BBers.

Grains arent evil but Paleo people tend to promote that and the superiority of the paleo lifestyle by looking only at diet, and ignoring all of the facts about paleo lifestyle (no medicine, no technology, no gym, etc.). Cherry picking the 'facts' and wind up being ' just a bunch of rich Americans who get to make inane choices about their food intake.'

in my opinion.......
they have something called a mediterranean diet. you don't have to change the electrical outlets in your house to the euro type to be on that diet. you don't have to learn the language of the mediterranean. so they should change the name of the mediterranean diet because we do not live exactly like the people of the mediterranean... how about south beach. i don't live on a beach so i'm sure lyle would say i can't be on that diet... total nonsense. his argument was off base.

First, there is no 'one' mediterranean diet since you have at least 16 countries around the mediterranean. The proponents of this diet should be careful about touting its benefits because the American Heart Association says on their site:

The incidence of heart disease in Mediterranean countries is lower than in the United States. Death rates are lower, too. But this may not be entirely due to the diet. Lifestyle factors (such as more physical activity and extended social support systems) may also play a part.

http://www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=4644

Just as what Lyle was saying above: if you want to tout the awesomeness of a diet or lifestyle, then you have to incorporate all of the factors, not just pick and choose the ones you find convenient.

As for the South Beach title, considering that they guy who came up with the diet did it prevent heart disease in his own patients, I doubt the title had anything to do with South Beach rather than marketing (and I dont know if the Doctor or his patients all lived in South Beach but I also doubt that the people of South Beach eat like the book says).

i like the paleo influenced diet. i'ts easy to follow, and very satifying. on a personal note, i like rants. i think that they are funny. i suspect that mcdonald's rant was aimed towards the paleo fanatics. and, they are fanatical!

Exactly.

Lyle has a degree in Physiology.

My current bf% may be a bit higher than inital estimate. I was 262lb this morning and I expect to b in "6 week out condition" at 220lb. I dont intend to burn muscle, I am just not that good at maths and may have underestimated my current bf level. I compete at around 215-220 mark. I am fat now after a few prohormone and hungry jacks cycles so am trying to detox and get lean and healthy. This Paleo diet seemed to make good sense and seems more long term sustainable than keto diet which has worked for me but was limiting in many ways.

What about a more balanced approach, if you dont like keto you can cycle carbs.

yea, the "fat burning diet" by jay robb is exactly that. it's also very similar to the paleo diet. on his plan, you go 1-2 days low carb, then 1 day high carb. it's a very interesting diet book. the biggest difference is what he considers to be "low carb." if i remember right, on low carb days you could go as high as around 80grams (of carbs).
