My friend is constantly claiming that "Most" pro bodybuilders, don't do Squats and Dead lifts any more...while this may be true for a few months or even weeks out of the year, I find it hard to believe they simply "don't do them" his reasoning was because it supposedly adds "too much" width to there waist, etc... I would think there workouts would be built around these types of compound lifts...

How many Pro's does your friend know? I don't care what you do, if you don't eat you will not grow..so exercise will not make you have a wider waist.

That's interesting your friend said that. I've trained with Johnnie Jackson once years ago at metroflex. It was back day and we were doing many sets of deads. It was one of the most brutal workouts in my life.

lol tell your friend that while deadlifts and squats may have an effect on there waist line, I think genetics plays a role.

About 3-4 years ago I had a deadlift of 650 lbs (before diet) and I was able to fit into size 28 jeans after I dieted down. It was very uncomfortable at the waist, and I had to cut the legs off at little bit past the fly so my legs would fit, plus the awkward mangina so my tool wouldn't hang out. But after all that trouble I won the $20 bet that I could wear size 28 jeans at 197 with a deadift of 575 (down from the 650, but this was my first diet, and I kinda messed up royally with it.

I think bodybuilders understand this concept too. I don't know any pro bodybuilders personally, and and as Mr. G has posted, I would question whether your friend does too...

I think you buddy doesnt really know and hes throwing that out there. Ive seen pro's squat but usually not awfully heavy they (from what my own eyes have seen) pre exhaust the quads then procede to squat descent weight, but they do squat and deadlift. Ive seen jeremy freeman doing working sets with close to six hundred also, which isnt to light:D.

I have seen ONE pro say that in a video (can't remember who, they all blur). Realistically, I think its bollocks.

Diet + genetics is 99% of your waist in my opinion.

Maybe not now if they are maintaining and refining, but when they were building their phisiques they usualy did, and i know a couple pros, they have genetic great structures but you won´t be a pro doing push ups and pull ups

I have occassionally read an article where a pro admits to no longer squatting and/or deadlifting but there is usually a related injury being worked around.

There are not many pro's who are going to say, "Oh my, my legs are too big and my back is too thick. I think I'll do leg extension and hypers today instead."

Vince Taylor.....

mentioned he no longer did squats due to injuries and he basically stuck with the leg press and hacks. He did this for years while competing for the Mr. O.

its genetics. doing deads might add 1-2 inches but comon. for example johnnie jackson deads very heavy all year round. his waist is still pretty streamline.

This is true, I can attest to that. He has thick dense muscles yet his waist is still pretty slim. I was struggling to get reps for 405 on deads that day while Johnnie was pulling 585 like it was nothing.:eek::eek:

I see BB's squat all the time. Never see them deadlift. Asked about it once and was told the deadlift screws up their training schedule b/c of the recovery time. Makes sense.

I'm not a pro and never Could be but, I squat every week and dead every other week...I think your friend is talking out of his ass...The Pro's may not squat and dead now but they have certainly paid the price at one time or another.

Tell us some of the other things your buddy has told you that you might think are a little outlandish. Maybe we can find a pattern here.
