RTD vs. Whey Powder effectiveness?

I remember info from back in the day, but maybe things have changed or science has progressed. Haven't looked into this in quite a while.

RTD's are much quicker, easier, convenient, tastier and have no clean up.....but the question is does the quality compare to a whey isolate powder? From what i remember RTD's must be heated to insure purity, which denatures the protein. Does this hold true or would you consider them equal in quality and effectiveness? I know when i take an energy RTD they are always potent so the heat couldn't have effected those too much.

I know a guy that is making great gains drinking a RTD MonsterMilk and eating a NaturesVally granola bar for 3 of his 5 meals so their has to be somthin good in it

There is no difference between the two....you are fine.

RTD typically has carbs and more vitamins and minerals while whey is only protein

I personally prefer RTD

Can anyone confirm or deny denatured protein from the production (heating?) process of RTD's....

Most rtd's use a sweet whey which is like animal grade protein. Very few companys make a true isolate despite their claims. I found isolate only no carbs when leaning up and isolate with 2 scoops of twin lab ultrafuel or a gatorade post for bulking. The isolate cannot be beat in terms of fast recovery. Another option i9s 8 squirts of int. egg whites 1-2 scoops isolate and maybe throwing in some powder maltodextrin.

There is nothing wrong with denatured protein. In fact, it is easier for your body's digestive enzymes to digest denatured protein. On the other hand, certain foods in their raw state contain their own enzymes which can help your digestive process move along. That said, obviously, whey protein is not a natural, raw, whole food so it will not have these natural enzymes. Furthermore, I'm fairly certain that most whey is pasteurized and heat treated... so it should be denatured to begin with.

This.

Denatured doesn't necessarily mean bad. It may sound that way but it is just a process which proteins undergo during cooking. And we all cook most of our foods, right? :lightbulb:

To the OP: here's something you can read about protein denaturation: Did Cooking Give Humans An Evolutionary Edge? : NPR

"... the conclusion of the people who investigated this question is that the significant consequence is that when you heat protein at all, then it tends to lose its structure. It's called denaturation, the sort of - it's like a ball of wool that is tightly wound. And as you heat the protein, it opens up. And the significance of being opened up is that it is then much easier for the digestive enzymes to come in and snip off the peptide bonds, to break off the amino acids. [...] It becomes digestible in a way that it previously was not. And so this is a completely predictable consequence of heating. I mean, denaturation, of course, it's hugely important. One of the ways in which we denature protein is by putting them in acid. And guess what our stomach is full of? It's full of, you know, hydrochloric acid, pH 1 or 2 - very, very acidic. So that starts the process. But cooking really accelerates the amount of denaturation that happens and, therefore, it exposes these molecules to easy action of the digestive enzyme."

A lot of people seem to freak out about diet and claim you need 4-8 whole food meals a day. It's simply a broscience myth - so many guys have gotten big on meal replacements and protein powders used in conjunction with a little fruit or a granola bar.
