Ok I know that the bigger you get the more you snore, or so that's what happens to me.... Well the wife is fed up, she says I snore so loud that she can't sleep and sometimes she says I stop breathing for a couple of seconds and it scares her. I'm 5'7 210lbs, I am by no means considered a big guy, and she keeps telling me that I need to lose "muscle" because she's worried for my health and that I should slowed down at the gym. Come on, I'm 25, I'm not ready to slow down at the gym or lose muscle. I think the snoring is what started her worries, is there anything I can take or do to help with the snoring? Thanks.

Sounds like you definately could have sleep apnea. Go to a doctor and have them recommend you to a sleep specialist. I've got it and it really dosn't have anything to do with your weight.

I would like to reiterate what xcel said. Get thee to a sleep specialist and consider getting a CPAP machine. You'll feel like a new born baby in the morning (after you get accustomed to it).

In the meantime, try Breathe Right strips, don't sleep on your back (try an extra pillow between your knees to help), make sure you have a good pillow and mattress. But these are not a substitute for a CPAP machine.

Sleep apnea is no joke. It can cause high blood pressure and other circulatory problems. It will take years from your life and ruin the years it doesn't take.

thx guys, I did wanna try those breathe right strips, and I will now for sure, I only sleep on my sides and my bed is one of the best in the business. If the problem persists, I guess I will go see a doctor about it.

this is very serious if untreated, you have sleep apnea and it will only get worse if you continue to grow/gain weight beit muscle or fat. you need to see your doctor and have a sleep study done. you will be reffered to a specialist who will determine if cpap or surgery is best. the breath strips will not work. sleep apnea will cause high blood pressure which can lead to kidney failure and also can cause heartattack and stroke along with memory/focus problems. i had severe apnea and after struggling with the cpap i had the surgery and now i am cured, i cannot believe the difference i feel. the surgery was horribly painful but was well worth it. again this is serious and will take years off of your life.....do something about it now.

Sounds like sleep apnea like everyone said. Its surprisingly common with bigger guys, they actually found that its far more common in individuals with necks bigger than 18", fat or muscle. Definetly see a specialist and have a sleep study done, like someone mentioned its a serious condition that needs to be addressed.

so you guys can determine that I have a sleep apnea from the fact that I snore loud enough....? Is their anymore signs that could determine that for sure?

your girl says you stop breathing, and i bet your tired alot, sleep a long time and always feel like you needed more sleep.

Great advice guys, I have noticed this happening recently, I actually wake myself up sometimes when I stop breathing, going to make an appointment with my doctor, never realised it was anything serious but after reading this I changed my mind.

besides the health aspects when we reach stage 4 (REM) sleep stage is when we secrete a majority of natural gh. this is very important for bodybuilders. if your constantly have episodes of apnea this is pulling you out of stage 4 and into stage 2 & 3. you never actually wake up your sleep is not deep enough to be fully rested

Sounds like sleep apnea to me also. See a doctor.

Im very confident I have this Sleep apnea. I have always naturally had high BP. I snore very loud when I sleep especially when im bigger. I used to have to take med's for snoring so my g/f could sleep. I have to stay up until about 3-5am before I can get tired enough to pass out. If I don't get at least 9 hours of sleep I feel tired most of the day until the night time. I also have a weird breathing issue where I have to take very deep breaths to catch my breath some times.

Can some one recommend the fastest easiest way to take care of this? Im sure a family doc wouldn't be who I would want to call for this. What is the surgery like? fast recovery? Does insurance usually cover it? if not what's the cost? I definitely don't want to use a machine to sleep for the rest of my life. Thanks for any advice.

dave you need to see your family doctor so he can reffer you to a specialist. i went to a pulmonary specialist and an ear, nose and throat doctor. they recommended since i was still young to try the surgery. note the surgery only has a 60% success rate but i feel is worth the risk and having to sleep on a machine was not going to happen, those things suck big time. anyways the surgery was successful i am cured and feel a million times better. they removed a centimeter of flesh around the back of my throat, removed the tonsils and adnoids and burnt back some of the sinus tissue in my nose. this surgery is extremely painful i aint gonna lie. i could not eat solid food for about 3 weeks. it is covered by most insurance just check your policy 1st. mine covered the 1st $5,000 of everything involved so i will prolly will have to pay out about $2,000 in medical bills. i gotta say the pain and money were definetly worth it.

hey edge, I do agree that I am tired in the mornings but always though that I just wasn't a morning kind of person and also you are right, I could sleep anytime during the day but I just thought it's cause my bed was so damn comfortable haha. One thing tho, the wife says that last year when I went down about 20lbs to go to Cancun, I didn't snore at all....

Got the same problem bro.

I went to my doc who is part of a large practice. Before doing a sleep study, they sent me home with this tiny machine that monitored my O2 levels. It just clips on your finger (tapes on actually) and you turn it on and then go to bed. It won't tell if you HAVE sleep apnea, bit it will tell you if you DON'T.

I didn't, so I went to an ENT (earn, nose and throat doc). He spent a minute blowing mist up my nose and said I had a deviated septum (the path from my nose to the bck of my throat is not straight or clear). THIS is covered by insurance, and it will fix the snoring most of the time. However he was such a wanker (and the desription sounded pretty bad), I have wimped out.

The sleep right strips are a good first step. There are also a couple of specialized pillows that help. None do crap for me. But if I sleep on my back, it is very bad.

Don't wait....Edge is right this is very serious...and the cpap really is'nt that bad once you get used to it...when you get your sleep study done you will be shocked...after looking at the video and seeing my charts it scared me to death...I was having over 100 episodes(awakenings) per 7hrs sleep one time I stopped breathing for almost 2 minutes...doc told me it was taking 1-2 hrs to get my oxygen levels back to normal after I woke...I was walking around exhausted..he said I never reached rem stage...I always wondered why people talked about their dreams and I could never remember mine...because I was'nt having any...I'm talking years...oh by the way the doc's convinced my high BP is from the apnea..sure wish I'd have done something about it sooner....good luck,GF

Im thinking about making an appointment with this place: http://www.sleepcenteroc.com/?gclid=CKDJk-Xwx4UCFSZpGAodcl3dpg

I have PPO insurance and I'm about to lose it really soon, so hopefully I can just get the surgery soon as possible. Do they try to determine which part's of your body would benefit the most from surgery, for me I feel like it will be my nostril area and throat, if I pinch my nose and open my mouth/throat I feel like I can breath good.

the surgery involves taking out everything they can in your throat, lol. now for me the doc said i had extensive scar tissue in my nasal cavity, thought i was a boxer, must have been from football. he said it looked like my nose had been broken. so in addition to the throat surgery they went into my sinus's and burnt them back to create more of an airway. my throat hurt so bad i didnt notice my nose, lol. plan on dropping about 25lbs since there is no way in hell to eat and your on so many pain meds you have no appetite
