This helps explain why they seem a little whacky. More protein please....Also when is the medical community going to realise the BMI is somewhat flawed in that it does not acknowledge any difference in weight related to body fat or muscle mass. Any extra weight does represent added stress to the body, but certainly there is a difference if that mass is muscle as opposed to fat.

Eating veggies shrinks the brain
14 Sep 2008, 0103 hrs IST,AGENCIES

MELBOURNE: Scientists have discovered that going veggie could be bad for your brain-with those on a meat-free diet six times more likely to suffer brain shrinkage.

Vegans and vegetarians are the most likely to be deficient because the best sources of the vitamin are meat, particularly liver, milk and fish. Vitamin B12 deficiency can also cause anaemia and inflammation of the nervous system. Yeast extracts are one of the few vegetarian foods which provide good levels of the vitamin.

The link was discovered by Oxford University scientists who used memory tests, physical checks and brain scans to examine 107 people between the ages of 61 and 87.

When the volunteers were retested five years later the medics found those with the lowest levels of vitamin B12 were also the most likely to have brain shrinkage. It confirms earlier research showing a link between brain atrophy and low levels of B12.

Brain scans of more than 1,800 people found that people who downed 14 drinks or more a week had 1.6% more brain shrinkage than teetotallers. Women in their seventies were the most at risk.

Beer does less damage than wine according to a study in Alcohol and Alcoholism.

Researchers found that the hippocampus-the part of the brain that stores memories - was 10% smaller in beer drinkers than those who stuck to wine.

And being overweight or obese is linked to brain loss, Swedish researchers discovered. Scans of around 300 women found that those with brain shrink had an average body mass index of 27 And for every one point increase in their BMI the loss rose by 13 to 16%.

So not having enough B12, drinking too much and being overweight is bad for you? Who knew? Not sure what this has to do with being a vegetarian.

A study on 100 people between the ages of 60 and 90 showed brain shrinkage? Must be all the veggies they feed them and not the fact that all of our brains shrink during that age of life. I'm curious to what the actual numbers are on the brain shrinkage. Six times more doesn't mean much when you don't know what the numbers are. They article also never mentioned how many vegetarians were used as a comparison. I wonder how many vegetarians there are in a group of 100 at that age bracket.

Many older folks have natural B12 deficiencies. You notice the article doesn't say that vegetarians have greater brain shrinkage, but folks with B12 deficiencies do... The article makes the leap that since vegetarians have fewer natural sources of the vitamin they are more likely to have shrinkage. One might easily argue that vegetarians are less likely to have deficiencies simply because they are often much more conscious of their diet and supplementation.

Any balanced vegetarian diet is going to provide enough B12, especially Ovo-Lacto. For anyone still worried, there are B12 supplements which I am sure are used by a number of folks here who eat a lot of meat.

I've been a veggie for a decade now and haven't noticed any detrimental side effects beyond not getting enough fats and EFA's in my diet. I've never been a sex pinata before, but maybe some just can't get enough meat in them? :D

As far as vegetarians being called whacky, I resent that. Some of us are straight up batshit crazy and I honestly get a little scared talking to some of the others at times. Ever been enjoying your breakfast and have someone remind you that you are actually eating chicken menstruation? F'n vegans, I hate those guys.
