this is a interview that i did a few months back and thought it appropriate based on the discussions today.. i called him back the other day and went over a few things to get his opinion on what i did not cover origionally..so here it goes..
the gentleman in question is a well respected competitor in the ifbb who competes in the world games (drug tested).. he resides in europe.. he has placed in top three and is noted for his conditioning and size.. although he is shorter in stature, he does pack some considerable mass.. in some of this i will have to paraphrase based on the fact that his english is good but, not perfect.. the content will not be changed.. his name and weight class are held secret so that he does not get into trouble with the power that be in regards to drug testing ect..

ABOUT DRUG TESTING IN THE GAMES : " well the testing is done to ioc standards.. but, no one is natural if that is what you are asking (laughs). drug tested events are not "natural" events.. they know that and we know that.. those who are caught are just foolish..you can not use nandrolone and expect to pass that test.. but, one can use numerous fast acting compounds and pass with little problems.. i mean, look at the heavyweight division.. some are 250 and very , very lean.. not to hard to think about.. no?"

ON TRAINING METHODS : " i train every day.. well almost.. at least 5 days a weeks and sometimes 6... my sessions last about 35 to 40 minutes... i base my methods on the fact that training is only a small part of the equation.. one can grow from taking anabolics alone and increasing calories.. i have experimented with this least year.. i stopped all training for 4 months.. i was surprised that i didi not lose much mass at all.. i had build a pretty good base froom many many years of lifting.. it did not want to go away (laughs).. when i resumed anabolics and increased my calories slightly i put on a fair amount of muscle right away with no training.. so this told me what i always belived.. just a little amount of stimulation was required to stimulate my gains.. so i started incorporating this many years ago and experienced my best gains in years.. please do not get me wrong.. i train as you say, hardcore.. but, very brief..i train in the push- pull method.. all chest delt and tricep exercises in one day.. all rowing and biceps the next.. legs by themselves.. and start all over again.. ( i then asked for a example) well.. chest might look like this .. incline barbell for 1 set.. but, it might be a drop set.. then i would go to barbell presses and do 1 drop set.. then triceps would be dips or closegrip benches for one set with drops.. the next time i train thses muscle groups i would do something different.. maybe one set of flat db presses followed by flat benches for one set.. then i would do dumbell press for my shoulders for one set followed by wide grip upright rows.. then triceps would be overhead extensions for one set ansd maybe, i f a ifeel like it, one last set of pushdowns.. i train to failure and try to increase poundage as often as possible.. very simple really.. i leave and rest and eat.. works very well for me.. most sessions take less than 40 minutes.. some weeks i hit the muscle three times..some weeks two times.."

ON RANGE OF MOTION: " i do not believe in doing a full range of motion for most exercises..most exercise do not allow a muscle to do through a full range of motion anyway.. but, are good mass builders.. i do the strongest range of motion to its fullest.. military presses are brought down down to my eyes or nose than back up.. dips are to 90 degrees.. it allows for more weight and is safer"..

DIET : "my diet is very simple..i eat 5 meals a day.. i average 200 to 250 grams of protein a day.. half that is from powders.. i keep my carbs high and fat low to moderate..i handle carbs fine and feel better with them.. simple sugars are kept to bare minimum and only after my workouts.. after that , all carbs are from grains and vegetables.. supplements are kept high.. i take vitamins and minerals and also take my fish oils (phil would be proud) and other things that keep me healthy.. extra c and e also are there.."

GEAR : " i take gear in cycles of 6-8 months cycles.. after my shows i stop all gear and take hcg and anti e's to fight the estrogen.. i recup pretty fast and return to normal in quick time.. i still train the same and keep supplements high.. since i am over 40 years of age, i do keep a small amount of test cyp in my system at 200 mgs a week.. after i get back on my anabolics i switch to fast acting anabolics like tren, prop, winny, dbol ect..i use gh in small amounts at 4-6 ius a day when i can afford it.. i do not use insulin.. have tried igf and did not like it.. waste of money for me.. i find that i can do with out test as my main anabolic and i like to switch around my anabolics through out my cycle.. i use little gear.. my biggest cyle was 75mgs of tren three times a week cycled with 500 mgs of prop with 25 mgs of dbol a day.. gh at 6 ius.. i really do not like to take much and my system is thankfully very sensitive to the compounds.. before a show i will use clen and some other fat burning compounds.. i do not like to use any thing to aid in water loss.. i have had bad experiences from this.."

ON HEALTH OF BODYBUILDERS : "anabolics are rarely to blame .. most iof the problems i have seen in the usa and here in europe is from abusing lasiks and other compounds.. many bodybuilders take pain killers.. some of years at a time.. tom prince i believe said this and that is a big problem.. very hard on kidneys you know.. y ou must keep water off when estrogen is high.. if not, blood pressure will increase.. one must also watch for bad blood readings.. i have doctor visits every 6 months..i adjust my supplements according to what they find..i take no ther drugs beside what is required for my bodybuilding.. no pain killers.. no drinks, no smoking.. i get my good sleep a night.. and do my cardio everyday.. my readings are rarely bad or off in any way.. most competitors do not take the required precautions.. that is their fault.. i see where mr youngblood had recently died.. i have never seen a picture where he was not very red .. i hate to judge any one but, i bet he had very high blood for many years.. something that could have been prevented easy.. plus a doctors office vist.. there is never a need to gain excessive weight.. i try to stay with in 20-25 pounds of my contest weight.."

ANY PLANS ON TRYING TO GET ON THE PRO STAGE? : "no.. my mr olympia is the world games every year.. i treat it like that..

FUTURE OF BODYBUILDING : "very bright.. i see many new pros coming up in the states that will make it interesting.. i follow bodybuilding in the states very much.. many new national competitors will make a impact on the pro ranks in the future.. but, we have many freaks coming up in europe.. it is exciting.."

THE PERFECT PHYSIQUE : "you can never have too big a delt.. never have too wide a back.. never have too much sweep to the quad or hamstring .. but, waist must be tight.. put on all the size you can.. but, waist must be small.. no?"

BEST BODYBUILDER THAT EVER LIVED? : "ronnie coleman.. no one is close"

ON HIS GYM: "i train in a very hardcore gym.. it is small and mainly has free weights.. we have dumbells up to 150 pounds and many squat racks and other basic things.. any machines we have are old nautilus or panatta sport machines.. they work fine.. i like free weights better anyway"..


he will be competing very soon and hopes to make a big splash again.. he is up 7 pounds this time out from last year and hopes to maintain it and come in at the top of his weight class and finally take the top spot.. he had different idea in regards to training and much else but, a refreshing view..

BRAVO ,LATS ,BRAVO WELL SAID , ALMOST EXACT FORMULA I HAVE USED FOR 20 YEARS .. AGAIN NICELY PUT IN WORDS .. ONLY THING ANY DIFFERENT AND IT MAY BE NOT SO DIFFERENT ...IS TOTAL WITH WARM UPS AND WORK SETS COMBINED ABOUT 10 TOTAL SETS PER BODY PART ,
AND I DO ONE BODY PART A DAY..... 6 DAYZ THEN START OVER ,REST DAYZ ARE ALL BY FEEL =FEEL LIKE TRAINING I DO ....NOT FEEL LIKE TRAINING DONT TRAIN. SIMPLE ..
 
Thanks Lats. Your friend offered some of the soundest advice I have heard in a while. Though different things work for different people, I believe few would fail to benefit from following a similiar program.

And if its good enuf for Tom, it's good enuf for me!! :)

interesting...to hear that his protein intake was relatively low, i dont think you mentioned his bw offeason or contest...
 
CAL, the reason why i did not mention his contest weight is that some would be able to figure out who he was or at least have a idea.. since some of the article deals with drug testing the how to pass it, i did not want him to be scutinized.. as for the protein.. he and i both have the same ideas.. i do not believe that massive amounts of protein are needed.. past a certain amount, regardless if you are using aas to enhance absorbtion, it is a waste.. just my opinion..
