Too Much Water

A good friend of mine was just hospitalized for five days. He was having seizures, and almost died. His kidney function was off the chart. Culprit? Too much water.

He works insanely long hours as a trainer, and got into the habit of drinking water all day long. He was washing the sodium from his system, which made him thirstier, so it became a vicious circle. He had gotten up to two gallons a day.

He was also going through a divorce, so that stress was a factor no doubt. But let this be a lesson to us all: NOTHING IN EXCESS! Even water isn't harmless.

He diluted his blood electrolytes

Coming from a Triathlon background this is not news to me. He suffered from Hyponatremia. Low blood salt. That's why gatorade (or the like) is better than water if you are excessively sweating. You don't need gatorade for a 2 mile jog. But a 5 hour triathlon yes. He's very lucky he is not dead.

So this is a happy story

Hi P

Not A was it? Donnie Estell?

water

even the accepted norm that you need 8... eight ounce glasses of water per day is a myth. there is nothing carved in stone regarding water. sometimes you need more ,sometimes less. if your pee is dark yellow drink more.

I could never understand why some people drink so much water. I drink when I'm thirsty, that's it. I don't know how people can just keep drinking water even when they're not thirsty. Water tastes horrible to me if I'm not actually thirsty and I think there is good physiological reason for that, like... you don't need it right now.

It just teaches us that the more water we drink...the more sodium we should consume to keep things balanced.

I don't mean this as any disrespect to your friend. That was a very serious situation.

This is an article that opens your eyes though. Anything can be made out to be extremely dangerous. Obviously, steroids are one such thing- Politicians and interest groups do it to us all the time.

---------------------------------------
Ban Dihydrogen Monoxide!

The Invisible Killer
Dihydrogen monoxide is colorless, odorless, tasteless, and kills uncounted thousands of people every year. Most of these deaths are caused by accidental inhalation of DHMO, but the dangers of dihydrogen monoxide do not end there. Prolonged exposure to its solid form causes severe tissue damage. Symptoms of DHMO ingestion can include excessive sweating and urination, and possibly a bloated feeling, nausea, vomiting and body electrolyte imbalance. For those who have become dependent, DHMO withdrawal means certain death.

Dihydrogen monoxide:

is also known as hydroxyl acid, and is the major component of acid rain.
contributes to the "greenhouse effect."
may cause severe burns.
contributes to the erosion of our natural landscape.
accelerates corrosion and rusting of many metals.
may cause electrical failures and decreased effectiveness of automobile brakes.
has been found in excised tumors of terminal cancer patients.
Contamination Is Reaching Epidemic Proportions!

Quantities of dihydrogen monoxide have been found in almost every stream, lake, and reservoir in America today. But the pollution is global, and the contaminant has even been found in Antarctic ice. DHMO has caused millions of dollars of property damage in the midwest, and recently California.

Despite the danger, dihydrogen monoxide is often used:

as an industrial solvent and coolant.
in nuclear power plants.
in the production of styrofoam.
as a fire retardant.
in many forms of cruel animal research.
in the distribution of pesticides. Even after washing, produce remains contaminated by this chemical.
as an additive in certain "junk-foods" and other food products.
Companies dump waste DHMO into rivers and the ocean, and nothing can be done to stop them because this practice is still legal. The impact on wildlife is extreme, and we cannot afford to ignore it any longer!

The Horror Must Be Stopped!

The American government has refused to ban the production, distribution, or use of this damaging chemical due to its "importance to the economic health of this nation." In fact, the navy and other military organizations are conducting experiments with DHMO, and designing multi-billion dollar devices to control and utilize it during warfare situations. Hundreds of military research facilities receive tons of it through a highly sophisticated underground distribution network. Many store large quantities for later use.

Dihydrogen monoxide should be replaced by DNP...b/c DNP is very safe

damn.. ive heard of this.. but..

never thought much of it.
honestly, i love water. i get anywhere from 2 gallons - 4 gallons a day.. but there is a lot of salt in my diet.. maybe thats what keeps me alive.
im glad your friend is recovering fine. :)

AHAHA i love that. Ive heard that before, kills me every time.

:D

I've taken Dante's and Massive G's suggestion and add a touch of sea salt and glycerol to my water...I seem to be just fine. Although I don't go crazy with water consumption...maybe a gallon a day pending heat/humidity etc.

Not the 1st I have heard of the low sodium from too much water. I get in about 1 gallon per day and im healthy with that. I do drink gatorade if im extremely hot or sweating profusely.

Phil, I sent you a message at gmail. Don't really want to post the guy's name here.

PM

I also drink over 2 gallons a day on a pretty regular basis and i'm still alive and perfectly healthy....

I drink a lot of water everyday but I also add a little propel or gaterade to my bottle. Just a little bit of powder will add the necessary sodium and other elements to keep everything in balance.

SmartWater! The stuff is the wettest tasting water and inexpensive. I add gatorade powder to it when I'm seriously leaking:s:ar-wars

Any less than 1 gallon in a day and I am thirsty as hell. No worries though as I do not retrict sodium.

I drink when I am thirsty, I eat when I am hungry, and I sleep when I am tiered. I pretty much do as my body tells me. Who knows what our bodies need? Our bodies, that's who. So listen and stop thinking so much.

Anything can be abused! I'm not saying your friend was abusing it, I'm simply saying anything can be harmful in excessive amounts.
