Hi guys. I dont post here as I feel its better to read and learn from everyone but I had a question and thought with the number of open minded and different kinds of people here I'd be able to get many different perspectives on this.

Ive searched and read up on fruit but was hoping that I could get a more updated response. I've seen quite a few people use fruit as their main source of carbs and wondered why?

Can fruit be used as a main source of carb in a diet?

Hopefully I'll get many different points on this. Alot of people have said no because of the fructose factor. But I'm unsure.

I like fruits for post workout (mixed into drink or in oatmeal).

I believe that more complex carbs (high polysacharides) are better for carb "staples." Like long grain brown rice, oatmeal, sweet potatoes/yams, whole grain pasta and breads.

I say don't forget your green veggies - there's no need to include these in your carb count.

I usually make brown rice, yams, and whole wheat bread my main source of carbs throughout the day, and use a malto and dextrose shake post-workout. Fructose doesn't cause an insulin spike, so I don't consider it for immediate post-workout nutrition. Also, I'm pretty sure it goes to liver glycogen, not muscle glycogen, so I personally wouldn't suggest it as the main carb in a bodybuilder's diet. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong on all this.

Yes Id rather use complex carbs as main source. Rice, beans, pasta, maltodex.
But a little fruit is a nice tasty snack!

Hmm.. I've heard of some bber's (Phil's bud I think his name is tom, not sure) using fruits as their ONLY carb source while in certain diet modes. I would be interested in hearing some info/opinions on this?

Yea I remember that. I think BCC was also doing something along the same lines. Both were eating high calories but performing no cardio due to their metabolisms I believe.

It would be interesting to hear more on that.

'Bump'

This has always been a hot topic, wanted to reignite this discussion. As mentioned here Tom Tognielli (?) uses/used fruit exclusively during his contest prep. I know there are others that do this as well.

I only eat fruit for carbs. Bananas and pineapple mainly. I hate rice and noodles and bread. Can't stand to eat them. I eat six bananas a day and thats it for carbs.

fruit is definitely important for a healthy diet i love eating fruit post workout, also eat bananas in my milkshake in them morning. i feel vitamins and supps cannot replace what whole foods have

You know this is something I have been tossing around for years, mainly when I heard about it on this forum. I have noticed most fruits and berries are very low GI carbs... they taste great and are packed with vitamins / anti oxidants. I eat a lot of them. I have never gone so far as to completely replace my carbs with fruit... I think cost prohibits that for me. But I try to eat a lot of fruit.

I never use to eat fruit for carbs until I hired Phil. I miss my oatmeal in the morning, but Its more convient to eat fruit for carbs and I have gotten great results so far.

Fruits have their place in a proper diet, although they should not be the primary source of your carbohydrates. Fruits contain high sugar content as well, so during the day you should be consuming much lower-glycemic carbs such as whole grains, beans, and veggies.

How could it ever be bad for anyone to eat fruits?

How could it ever be bad for anyone to eat fruits? Everyone should be eating multiple servings of fruit each and everyday. Depending on your blood type would be the quantity.

I love all fruits but I eat the most of the one's that are recommended for my blood type. For guys like me there is no better food in the world then fruits and vegetables, not even Protein.

I think that most people are affraid of the sugar content in fruit. That use to be the way I thought anyway until Phil switched my diet up.

I dont think your taking into consideration many other important factors than what you listed, and as a result, I think youre mislead. There is so much more to the nutritional value of a food source than its GI or sugar content. Much more important factors, actually.

I'm not debating the nutritional values of fruits, I am discussing their impact on body composition. ;)

Tony,

When eating for your blood type what do you think is more important? Obviously eating the beneficial and avoiding the avoidable is ideal but curious on what you believe has more effect.

Eating the foods that are considered "beneficial"?
Or
Avoiding the foods that are considered "avoidable"?

I have been using this: **broken link removed**

Contest Dieting

So who here would or has utilized fruit as their main carb source pre-contest and what type of conditioning were you able to achieve?

Yes, why else would we even be discussing this? Fruits and greens are IDEAL for a BBer's composition. ;)

Eating excessive amounts of high-glycemic fruits is not optimal for body composition. There are better carbohydrate sources for providing energy and maintaining lean muscle tissue.
