Just want some opinions on wether to do this or not.

Ive always been told not to do direct oblique work because it will give you a thicker waist and crunches etc activate the obliques enough.

What do you do for obliques?

I eat leaner!.......Abs are made in the Kitchen, not the Gym. Of course you can build your abs, but every movement you make works the abs (I had Hernia surgery, I know)When I work abs too much, they get blocky, like Dorian Yates. I don't like that.

no obliques.....

do body weight crunches or leg lifts, but leave obliques to atrophy, I see Cutler doing these in his vids and his waist has gotten a little bigger over time. R they from that or heavy legs and back day? Dont know, but why give the stimulus if ur BBing, thats what I think. Small waist, better V taper

gooey

working the obliques and inner ab wall are a must for bb's i belive...

it will help with your breathing on stage and waist line managment....

i see people doing side crunches on the lower back ext. machine and it looks like an injury waiting to happen!...

to answer the q, i dont think the obliques need to be "crunched to the side" to be worked properly... if you have ever done yoga you will know what i mean...

hanging leg raises are a good exersize and one i have just incorperated the last 2 weeks to help tighten my waist and keep it under control on stage.( i had some problems at the jrs with this)

another good thing to do is really concentrate on breathing through your chest and not your stomach, try it for a few days and your abs and obliques will be sore....

Try the wood chop illustarted in this article for functional oblique training.

You can do reverse wood chops also with the pully position to the floor or medicine ball.

Good answers, keep them coming

dragonfire, thanks for the links but do you really do any of that suff? I think id get some funny looks if I started doing any of that shit in my gym. I know its good to have functional capacity to your core and all that crap but BB is all about aesthetics and function usually takes a back seat until something goes wrong!

What do you mean bro, you do rotational work for obliques but not lateral flexion?

Thanks!

Stomach vacuums and sit-ups with a few kilos (5-10) of weight is all i do. Combined with things such as squats and deads, its all i've ever felt necessary for core strength.

Yes, for obliques when i train them I do the medicine ball rotation not on a exercie ball though . Just siting on a floor with a partner back to back and we alternate passing it back and forth. Us eto do them for wrestling and MMA. You will see a differance. The wood chop and reverse wood chop with a cable in a crossover machine. Let me tell you your whole obliques and rib cage area will be sore. These exercise won't build up your waist like side bends etc making it thicker.

Rope crunches, hanging leg raises, and stick twists are all great for the obliques and won't cause your waist to expand as long as breath correctly and don't use to much resistance.
