Squats are what thicken the obliques, not deadlifts. Deadlifts make your waist bigger by thickening the spinal erectors, which does not change anything about your waist width, only your pant size.
In addition to this, even squats only thicken the obliques, NOT the hip bones, which are BELOW your obliques and are what really define your waist size.
And finally, training abs correctly will actually tighten them up and certainly doesn't make them blocky.
You are right, I don't like the thick lower back and higher pant size, I consider that making my overall waist thicker, and makes me look shittier IMO. When I talk about waist I am also not just talking about hip size, I am talking about the absolute smallest portion of my abdomen
You were saying in another post about training a certain abdominal movement to make the waist smaller and tighter. Could you go into detail, you said it would warrant it's own post. Could you perhaps point us to a video of this being demonstrated?
You are very knowledgable, I enjoy your insight, thanks
I love deadlifts, especially high rep. Always double overhand.
There's something visceral and raw about being able to reach down and pick something heavy up off the ground. Very functional and useful exercise. I also grow easier when I do them religiously, about every 7-10 days.

I will make a thread on it sometime soon, someone probably has in the past. Here is the super, super short version lol: Keep your abs pulled in and engaged on everything, pay special attention to things like leg press, squats, rows, etc. The Russians used their gymnasts to prove that your abs are supposed to distend under heavy exertion, and from the look of most of our ancestors, I think our abs are supposed to be distend. You have to program your abs not to distend.
