Being bigger equals more fights?

it's the other way around - the bigger I am, the nicer everyone around me is
I agree here but coming up when I was still under say 210 lbs, I’m 5’7, it made a lot of “tough guys start shit and me being young and a bouncer, well I gave em what they thought they wanted. Now I’m not near a big as you but I’m generally the biggest guy in the room AND always smiling which seems to really make people gravitate to you bc you’re big and approachable. When alcohol is involved though this does change and since I almost never drink it’s always severely unfair as a drunk will almost always lose out to a sober guy and the cops always side with the sober guy though I’m in a mutual combat state so as long as you don’t curb stomp someone you’re ok. I really do think putting off a smiling happy face is a smart move all around

I’ve commented on this before…

While in college I was 5-10 241-245lbs during ball season. Pretty fucking big. I didn’t go out a whole lot, but when I did I’d always get dudes come up and do the typical “bro awe”. No fuckery.

After college I started training BJJ/MMA pretty seriously (as serious as you could with a 40h week job)

As I started competing, I kept moving down weight classes in BJJ eventually landing on 207.5 as a happy place, and fought at 185lbs (this was hell on earth to beat the scale)

As I evolved into a 205-210lb “fighter” body….i did find run ins with fuckheads increase on nights out.

You just gotta walk away. Best case scenario you hit him and leave. Highly unlikely. Break your 4th metatarsal on his eye socket while in Destin Florida? Much more likely. And/or jail
I’m leaving towards trying BJJ but have held off as all my fighter friends stay injured. They all do Muay Thai at a joint that does bjj as well. Being bigger I’ve always worried that if I go to roll with smaller dudes who are of course drastically spot me that they might push it too hard bc I’m big. My MT guys say as long as you’re humble this will not happen but I got two babies I can’t have a break or serious injury for a hobby. Your thoughts on it as a big guy who started at it even bigger?

The biggest injury risk is probably straining hands, elbows, biceps, shoulders.

Fightting in the GI is grips.

And no, especially higher level guys, they are not going to hurt your….unless you need to be taught a lesson.

Lower rank belts can get a little spazzy and your risk injury is MUCH higher like white belt vs white belt compared to white belt vs a purlple…..the higher ranked Guy is just going to Houdini around your back and grab a neck or snatch up an arm on the way around

Any advice as to picking a spot. I’ll say I’m in a college town that I consider “small” there are several gyms also I always assumed I would do ghee over no ghee (spelling?) you have an opinion there?

OP the best advice I can give is not to direct attention or energy toward insecure people that need constant ego validation. Be above them, because court is not a fun place to be, and we're far past the rules of honor in society.

I would do gi and no gi. No gi is faster pace and people tend to use more athleticism. In the gi you can use more grips and it slows things down a bit. I wouldn't shy away from one over the other although people tend to find their favorite as they progress.

Agree 100 percent. Unless you our your friends or family are in absolute danger of you can pocket your ego and just walk away you won.

I hate fighting (I am a black belt in karate) . . . but what is worse is filling out all the damn paperwork.

And fist fighting is so yesterday.

The complete opposite. When I was very young and very slim/lean I used to get quite a lot of idiots cause trouble. I did look like I was in a boyband with spiked up hair so that might explain that 😆 The bigger I got the less hassle. In fact I haven't had a single person kick off on me for 10+ years and I still go out quite a lot. I go to some dodgy places as well :D It's so far the other way that people are overly nice to me and it's not because I look like a tit... I am very well mannered and nice to everyone.

I should add anyone can be unlucky and sometimes you might be in the wrong place at the wrong time and you need to teach some idiot a lesson. Bad things happen all the time and there are lot's of crazy/angry people about. However, if you are getting into confrontations/fights regularly that's because of you and you probably need to work on your insecurities, attitude and/or aggression.

I’ll try that I guess the better question is which do you think translates to real world. Obviously no one wears a gi walking around but we are clothed. Last fight I got in the poor bastard had a biker cut style jacket on and I used it as a weapon on him, wound up popping his fucking eye. Mind you he started the shit with a sucker punch so it was justified. Being 5’7 though I feel the ground is where I should always go if I have to fight. Plus it seems a great way to train as I’m aging out of competing and weighing this much.

Only thing I’ve noticed is that a lot more people feel the need to ask me to arm wrestle them..I avoid going to bars though because I genuinely feel like it’s recipe for someone to start something once they get some liquid courage in their system.

I get this when I am on holiday but not really at home. I get asked every night to either arm wrestle or go on the punching machine

I would say both because for the most part in a real fight it's mainly about getting dominant positions. In a real fight I would not start trying to hit arm bars or gi chokes. I would get a dominant position and either restrain the person or land strikes if it was needed. But positions are the same in gi or no gi for the most part.

hasn't changed at all for me if anything more blokes checking you out. i guess i always had a resting cunt face and a wild look so getting older and bigger in size added some mid life tatts and a harley adds more to the look id say.

if anything its the people around me especially the dad bod parents respect my efforts.

No more fights since becoming a paramedic. I just think about all the crap I'll have to try and put back together again when the dust settles.

I had two friends I know beat the guy so bad, they killed them. Nobody wins in a fight. The one guy I knew for awhile. He is actually a nice guy in person, just lost his temper. He is lucky to only get 1 year in prison.

Yea I know a lot of states have shitty rules, if your lucky enough to be in a mutual combat state fighting is no issue. There is still that line you can’t cross “punitive strikes” which is easily avoided, but a leftie prosecutor might try. It is odd to me the worst crime states like say CA and NY have the strictest rules on self defense. Look at Florida it’s like Texas FAFO and there’s less crime. He’ll what last month the FL sheriff not Grady Judd had a press conference encouraging home owners to shoot robbers to “save the state money”. HYFR

It doesn't even have to be a bad beating. If some falls down and their head hits the ground just right, they are gonna be out for a minute... and you don't know at that point If you caused a subdural hematoma or something that will put them down bigtime in the following hours.

I’ve spent pretty much my whole adult life fighting in one capacity or another. From Corrections in a really rough prison, bouncing, private security, mma competition, bounty hunting etc.
imo being 6’1” 270 lbs stopped WAAAY more fights than it started. I got pressed more often because of my size by guys trying to look tough, but most don’t genuinely want to scrap. They want to impress someone.
Size was definitely a deterrent…and for those who were high or didn’t give a shit…the size and expertise stoped it pretty quick most of the time

If alcohol is involved, yes. As I got bigger more dudes would size me up or want to arm wrestle me.

Other then that people are usually nicer or unfortunately more timid or make awkward small talk about pre workouts and how badass they were in high school.
