Looks like it. I've seen a machine that appears similar to this at Gold's Gym.

You aren't going 'heavier' using a smith machine. You wouldnt be able to do the same weight free bar vs smith for military presses. Typically, lower back pains are going to be caused from other issues-tight hamstrings/glutes, etc..but thats another topic..

Oh I definitely agree with you on that. It's false weight meaning what I can actually lift. Having a membership at Planet Fitness taught me that. That's all they have are Smith Machines. I was in that gym for 6 months thinking i was doing pretty good on my max lifts... Getting into a real gym I couldn't belive how much weaker I really became.. Those stabilizer muscles not being used by a Smith Machine must do alot. I knew I couldn't lift the weight I was lifting on the Smith on a real bench with free weights but nowhere near as bad as I thought.. Again a Smith Machine is a useful tool but I wouldn't get stuck on it
