does casein cause subcutaneous water retention?

people who have had experiance dieting for a show... have you noticed if casein/caseinate protein causes water retention beneath the skin?

i switched over from whey isolate to a majority casein protein and although i'm feeling fuller/harder with the casein protein i'm also feeling bloated most of the time in the abdomen and there seems to a layer of water over my midsection....

HOWEVER, i'm not sure if its just my head playing tricks on me or its its really causing me to look smoother... because i'm not so lean that it would be obvious it might just be fat.

Interesting.

While I've never heard of casein causing water retention, it can cause bloating in the intestinal tract because of how long it takes to digest. Especially if you're lactose intolerant and the casein isn't lactose free. Thus, you may see your mid-section swell up a little, but it should be local only to that portion of your body.

waht kind of whey were you using? i assume it wasnt a quality product if casien is working better...

i got a bottle of the synthepure from synthetek for the feature member last month and have been using it, it really is a high quality whey, i have ordered some whey isolate from davisco also but the synthepure seems to be a different (better).... i assume it is from the way the cows are fed and raised in australia or new zeland...... the synthepure mixes very well in anything and it dosent cause any bloating or water retention.....

most people on this board havent experienced a high quality whey isolate, they go to gnc and buy the ON, or whatever is cheap that says "whey" on the bag, truth is there is a small % of whey in there and what it does have is less then par.....

i dont know if i would use strictly lba's for a protein source as the added glycerine migh upset your stomach if consumed in excess, but they are a good product as well....

i actually use nature's best isopure most of the time as far as whey goes. its a great products, i digest it just fine, however i really did feel that it actually digest too quickly if i'm going to have a shake and then not eat again for 3 or 4 hours.

with casein, i can feel it in my stomach for hours. and i did notice my muscles being fuller but the trade-off seems to be that i'm bloating on it with water retention in the midsection.

100% CORRECT. Using a protein that is a blend gives it a time released effect and your body will have more time to digest and absorb what you are using.

I would also suggest eating as much whole foods as possible each day and only using shakes when you need them.

Last thing. If you aren't already using a high quality digestive enzyme you should be.

i hvae no proof of this but noticed the same things years back. i only use whey isolate now.
 
Maybe it has some lactose in the mix?

Lactose causes me no end of water retention and stomach upsets, so i had to switch to whey isolate (with almost no lactose) a while back and the problems vanished.
 
MetRx

I know compared to taoday's standards, MetRx is rubbish, however, when it first came out in the 90's, a lot of bb's were using it and with great results. Keep in mind that MetRx was/is mostly casein.

In fact, Chris Faildo, who just won the Overall at the Team Universe tonight, was sponsored by MetRx and used it 4 times/day and was always shredded!
