So the question of the day is....when are you just a guy getting drunk and when are you an alcoholic? When do you cross the line into being a lush, a drunk, a full blow alchy vs just a guy who likes to drink, get drunk and post on drunk threads at night?

When work interferes with your drinking .... then you are an alchy :D

I dont drink or get drunk that often, so im fortunate to not have a problem with it

I would say when your drinking is tnterfering with family, relationships, work or personal goals. I may drink once or twice a year at most. I got to thinking one day about when you drink, or get drunk and start to puke, your body is violently rejecting it. I mean what other thing do people into their bodys that can cause death or cause you to puke, and not to mention the next day what you feel like, your body is trying to tell you something. I remember talking to Jay Cutler about this once, he told me he pretty much never drinks because it is one of the hardest things for the body to break down and it wrecks him so bad his body dosent work efficently for a few days.

Don't worry dude, If you re getting drunk 7 nights a week then you re an alcoholic, anything less than 7 days(4-5days) you're allright!:D

The jokes aside, I would say that when drinking start to interfere with your regular life - job, training, familiy, friends..., or you just drink to get through the day then you can be called an alcoholic! Anything other than that - I'd say you're just a person who likes to have fun, but still gotta be very careful of the potential health risks

AA is for quiters!!! J/K man you have to know if it is a prob. or not...if it is habitual and you need help then seek it and if you are still wondering if you have control over it (meanning you can quit for a month and/or more) then just see how ya do with it but if you go on some kinda binge or just start to have probs. with it then ya need to cut it out completely...Just my exp. with others some close, some not, and myself...

When a person Drinks…. How much a person consumes and how often they drink isn’t the only questions to ask ones self as to whether they have a problem or not….

How you treat others and yourself following the consumption of alcohol is also a major factor when considering, if one has a problem with alcohol.

Some have one beer, one night a week and become a total different person. To some peoples body it’s a poison, in which, it act in many different ways.

AA is not just for an alcoholic. It’s about living a life within a standard. Like a Bber, who lives his/her life within certain standards. I have been to many AA meets in support of friends and have never left one meeting without bring home with me, one good measure of how to live a better life.

I'm not aguing your post except for a few parts...I agree with most BTW, but no one has one beer one night a week unless to help fall asleep...and who else goes to AA besides someone who's addicted to something...I was forced to go along time ago by a court for a simple DUI and there was no one there that just went for fun...They all had probs. with it not say I didn't.

“Simple DUI”
There is nothing simple about a DUI if you have lost a family member and a friend, due to someone else who was drinking and driving….

”and who else goes to AA besides someone who's addicted to something...”
May you never have to experience the pain of having a family member or a friend who truly has a problem with alcohol. To attend an AA meeting and support this person is part of giving in life.

Bro there is something simple when you are not under the influence and the on side of the road test gets you into bracelets cause the cop want's to do it...I passed the test but not the breath test...Turns out the breathalizer was faulty so there is somethin simple about...Also the others that attend an AA meating are either friends or realatives of those with the prob. You're right about not having a loss due to a DD. but I have a Dad who suffers and I know too much about alcholism...

I'd say that when u NEED it when every time u have a problem, then u have a problem

can help to relax that's for sure, but as soon as u need it EVERY TIME u have a problem, then it sux

Sorry to hear of the traffic, “Entrapment” Tyrone. We, like many others share a common thread in alcoholism.
Be safe my friend.

Yes we do cause I limit it now to B-days and Holidays instead of most days cause I just can't do it...I was in the whole Fraternity scene and did it up but tried to always have a designated driver...now I just don't do it and on the speacial occasions my girl drives...You to bro as to Be safe my friend.:)

When ever you take away from lifes necessities to satisfy your own selfishness, then you have a problem. Only you can tell if your doing this.

Quantity/frequency

There is no set line. Guidelines given to me by so called experts, were drinking more than two drinks per evening, drinking more than 3 times per week. Seems ridiculously low, however the older I get, the more I see, the more I am coming closer to agreeing with that assessment.

Studies are being done that seem to indicate that brain chemistry actually changes a bit in alcoholics that once changed, seems to keep them with a permanent propensity to over indulge once started. BTW Not drinking does't prove your not an alcoholic, it is the cure. "Needing a drinK" does not diagnose you as an alchoholic necessarily. It is one of many signs, others include:

Other Signs:

Drinking "shooters"
Worrying at a company event or family function if there will be enough there.
Drinking before going to a party.
Relatives, friends, loved ones mention your drinking.
Leaving the bar with Bovine like women.
Leaving the bar with even in shape men.
etc.

Here is a self-test to help you review the role alcohol plays in your life. These questions incorporate many common symptoms of alcoholism . This test is intended to help you determine if you or someone you know needs to find out more about alcoholism; It is not intended to be used to establish the diagnosis of alcoholism.

Do you ever drink heavily when you are disappointed, under pressure or have had a quarrel with someone?

Can you handle more alcohol now than when you first started to drink?

Have you ever been unable to remember part of the previous evening, even though your friends said that you did not pass out?

When drinking with other people, do you try to have a few extra drinks when others won't know about?

Do you sometimes feel uncomfortable if alcohol is not available?

Do you sometimes feel a little guilty about your drinking?

Are you in more of a hurry to get your first drink of the day than you used to be?

Has a family member or close friend ever expressed concern or complained about your drinking?

Have you been having more memory 'blackouts' recently?

Do you often want to continue drinking after your friends say they've had enough?

Do you usually have a reason for the occasions when you drink heavily?

When you're sober, do you sometimes regret things you did or said while drinking?

Have you tried switching brands or drinks, or following different plans to control your drinking?

Have you sometimes failed to keep promises you.made to yourself about controlling or cutting down on your drinking?

Have you ever had a DWI (driving while intoxicated) or DUI (driving under the influence of alcohol) violation, or any other legal problem related to your drinking?

Do you try to avoid family or close friends while you are drinking?

Are you having more financial, work, school and/or family problems as a result of your drinking?

Has your physician ever advised you to cut down on your drinking?

Do you eat very little or irregularly during the periods when you are drinking?

Do you sometimes have the "shakes" in the morning and find that it helps to have a "little" drink, tranquilizer medication of some kind?

Have you recently noticed that you can't drink as much as you used to?

Do you sometimes stay drunk for several days at a time?

After periods of drinking do you sometimes see or hear things that aren't there?

Have you ever gone to anyone for, help about your drinking?

Do you ever feel depressed or anxious before, during or after of heavy drinking?

Any "yes" answer indicates that you may be a greater risk for alcoholism. More than one "yes" answer may indicate the presence of an alcohol-related problem or alcoholism, and the need for consultation with a alcoholism professional.
