I have a friend that has a pretty bad case of gout to the point where he has to get his feet lanced because they get so swollen. He suspects that from eating such high protein for so many years it is the main culprit of his problem. Is there any way to avoid this or is this a predisposed genetic condition that only some will suffer from when they consume high protein diets?

I helped someone a good while back who had had gout for years, it is genetic and the key is to not let your uric acid levels get too high in the first place, but I had him on some supplements and they really helped him, cherryies and things like that. Basically he had to limit alcohol intake, protein to a realistic level and drink loads more water, the rest I will have to dig out. If i remember rightly low or no red meat, no game meat, no shell fish prawns or lobster, fish twice a week at most. As many green veg, potatoes, saladas wanted, restricted grains, balance the diet up from there to suit the person according to size, height and training goals. I seriously think using aminos instead of eating protein would help achieve better gym results without the problems associated with eating high protein, just makes the case for LBA's even stronger, I of course have nothing to back that up with, it just makes sense as the aminos are directly absorbed. He also went onto to use a product called uricinex.
Avoid protein sources high in purines like meats and fish. You can replace this with protein powders or aminos. Dont eat too much fruit as well because fructose tends to increase uric acid levels.
I started suffering from gout in my mid to late 30's. I gave up red meat and it helped a little bit. In my mid 40's I inadvertently found the cure that worked for me. So I get no credit for resolving this as it really was purely by accident.
In my mid 40's I started including cruciferous vegetables in every meal and completely cut out grains to help hold my estrogen down. I also started getting lazy and started eating a lot less fruit. Then I started upping the red meat until I was having it multiple times daily. At some point in my late 40's I completely forgot about the gout. And today at 57 I've not had a relapse in at least 7-8 years.
I agree with using aminos to curb the onset of gout. If I didn't use amino acids
(LBA's, Metabolic Diet Amino v.4, Beverly Mass amino, etc.) I'd easily be eating twice to three times as much red meat and on my way to gout-town.
i know it is genetic in my family, as my father has it. His diet is fairly atrocious though. some good meals, but too much junk food. he does notice as he eats cleaner it doesn't flare up as much though.
I have had an episode with gout in the past. My doctor says that it's from a poor diet(yes I ate like shit when I was younger) and from high levels of uric acid. It can be treated by taking allopurinal which is RX. Hope I spelled it right.
