How do you judge a workout routine?

We've all tried different routines, but how and when do you know you have stumbled onto something good? Do you use subjective things like how it feels? Do you judge it by whether you are able to consistently add weight to the bar? Do you stick with it long enough to see if the tape measure and scale proves it is working? What is YOUR criteria for judging a new workout routine? Thanks!
 
I'm constantly tweaking my own routines, i don't usually pick a whole new routine per se.

Usually i can judge during the workout how well its hitting the muscles, i sometimes look at where i'm getting the pump to see if the part of the muscle i want to be hit is. Often i just go with something for a month or two, if i like where i'm going i'll stick longer, if i don't i'll try something else.

My mirror is my best friend, and apart from the hours i waste watching my handsome twin covort around in the mirror universe (he's not evil anymore, i gave him a shave), thats the best way to see IMHO.

Kinda hard for me to explain, just a case of knowing my body and what i want from it more than anything else.
 
A good way to meausre a workout is to keep a log book of your exercises and routines and weights used. The next time you come around to that workout(body part) go ahead and work out, then right your reps, sets, and time spent along with weight used. Compare it to your last work out and see how you did. If you got better, GOOD. If you didn't do so good then you need to tweak it a bit. Good luck.
