I don't know if I believe the often stated- "Your metabolism slows as you age"

I guess I don't really think it's true. I don't think the metabolism slows down that much. I think people get lazy and stop being as active is really what's going on. Every older person I see that gets off their ass and actally does something, loses weight.

My sister got a dog that my folks are watching for a while...my dad started walking the dog twice a day and lost 10 pounds in three weeks. He's 70 years old. Plus, he already was walking this trail by their house at least 5 days per week.

Most of you guys are trainers or have helped someone with a training/diet program. Do you agree that maybe that old "my metabolism has slowed down since I've gotten older" stuff could be just a result of life choices?

I think its definately and excuse some use but I do think its true to some degree. I dont really understand the science behind "the metabolism" but I could see how thyroid output could decrease, test levels drop, etc... which could be some factors in weight gain from age.

Mine has always been at a snails pace, how much slower can it get!

It may slow with age a bit, But I think you can train it if your active enough and follow a decent diet.

Is more muscle mass dependant as opposed to age dependant.

but as muscle mass get smaller when you get older, then can we say that metabolism goes down with age ?

in general people say that when they turn about 40 but I don't see how muscle mass can drastically get less important at this age so I would think that lazyness is one of the reason lol :D

yeah i always thought it was what Phil said. Because my dad is the same weight as he was 15 years ago but doesnt look the same.....

muscle mass decreases with lower test levels and GH. Resulting in a the feeling your "metabolism" slows down with age? (assuming still training and eating the same as before... not just sitting on the couch drinking beer and eating pizza)

I just put my Dad on an eating plan (upping his protein and lowering carbs as the day ends) and he is already working out cardio wise but i added circuit training as well.
he is proud his weight is same as it was 10 years ago, BUT admits his clothes don't fit the same, etc. it is b/c he has lost so much muscle mass, resulting in a slower metabolism, resulting in a bigger waist.

he is a VERY disciplined man, so i can't wait to take all his measurements, etc in a month or two. its funny, he has always ignored my bodybuilding lifestyle, won't even look at pictures of me on stage BUT he FINALLY asked me about his eating and now he is soooo excited. Hard headed old man finally broke down and asked!!!! -STEELE

thats really awesome, steele!

hahah. i know what you mean. i have sort of the same issue with some of my family members that dont acknowledge my passion and drive for this....always go out of their way to make a big deal out of me skipping family events because there are no gyms available, or bringing my own food to get-togethers, or just not eating with the family...things like that.

Hey sorry to go offtopic JT

But youngmuscle.... you only have one family bro, dont mess it up with them for your bodybuilding dreams. Theres more to life than the gym, your meals, ect.... im sure they would love for you to go to the family events and your being selfish because "there is no gyms available". You got to look at their point of veiw on it as well. I mean yeah they dont understand your drive/lifestyle. But im sure they can see your dedication and are happy for you. But family time is family time man.

I think Phil is dead on correct and that photo of Edge's father proves the point.

It's well documented that hormones go down as we age. now how much in an athlete that eats well? Who knows?

I think many use it as an excuse as why they are out of shape-(normal people) and generally activity levels slow as they age.

One thing people on using AAS and GH and thermogens should worry about is the effect of these substances on the hormonal system-long term.

I know exactly how you feel... especially my family and my GF's family.. they look at me like Im an asshole cuz I wont eat their fat greasy foods at family functions...

exactly. i think they should be thanking me for not looking at them in disgust when they are eating foods they KNOW have no other option than to be stored as fat.

Agreed.

Now, i know i am only 25 but....i have had people telling me for YEARS...yea i could eat whatever i wanted at your age...then i got older and my metabolism slowed down and i gained alot of weight.....well iv been eating what i wanted since i was born and iv had abs since i was 2 no matter what i ate or how low my activity got. I took off alot of time about 2yrs ago (6 months) after my show cuz of goin balls to the wall and being beat up for so long...took nothing, didnt exercise a bit, paid NO attention to nutrition, ate what i wanted....went down to about 203lbs...but NEVER lost my abs. Dont think i got above 14-15%......n that is pushin it with the estimate

I would have to agree with Phil....I am 38 now and i have a much easier time getting lean than i did at 28.....I weigh about 70 lbs more now than i did at that time also, and presently am at the same or less% in bodyfat...So i would have to say that my metabolism has shot up through major eating and exercise, and all that comes with that but its the added muscle that burns more fuel IMO..(the bigger engine burning more fuel theory)I also associate metabolism with energy levels and im as active now and as physically capable as i was when i was in my 20s...for sure...Not in my teens though, those were just crazy...Ive never taken a thermogenic (except bennies once at a dance...made my hair itch??) or taken up coffe drinking either, i always figured i'd save that stuff for when im older and need it  (wink)..Now im looking at my health more of course and still holding out on the prostate doc(im going to take up drinking on this day for the day and bringing candles), but i get my prostate specific androgen's done once a yr by blood since i turned 35..
So JT i believe it is something that happens to normal sedate people that lose their life lustre, not us....IMO
God i had 20 yr old friends that were sloths...but they displayed it in everything they did, look at some of the youth in their PRIME:rolleyes: today at the malls etc...???WOW

Hell i hope not, i turned 40 this past Jan:eek:

Phil is correct, The more muscle mass you have the more calories you burn. The more fat you have the easier it becomes to gain more fat!
