picture this: you balance yourself on one leg, stick your other leg in the air as you bend over and with a dumbell in one hand you do a dumbbell bent-over row. WTF is that? I know, I know, it's the gym (24 Hr Fitness) but still sick of seeing that shit.

how about this one

setting the calbles of a cable cross over to the very lowest setting (at the bottom) then you stand in the middle of the cross over with the cables in hand, BUT you are trying to balance yourself on one of those stupid 'half balls' (whatever they are called) and you do squats...why do ppl insist on making shit so difficult these days? just get under a damn bar and squat or at least get into a leg press.

LOL

That squat is actually quite creative

That seems a little strange, I do something similar i put one leg out and one arm out and balance myself to rehab my lower back injury. but doing a row wtf?

lol i always have to laugh when i see people new to working out try to do some type of contortion type workout...gets me everytime

My Olympic Lifting coach is having me do some balace type work. After 30 years of heavy lifting, I never have done any balance work and I am a totol Klutz!

Most of these people have never done anything in thier lives physically and it is good for them to regain a sense of thier bodies.

I see nothing wrong with it.................but I make sure to train where none of my friends will ever see me doing this assinine looking stuff :p

I mentioned this before and got flamed but I agree when lifiting weights your feet should be firmly planted on the ground. Working on your balance is great but not when you have an olympic bar on your back. The worst is that these trainers are teaching this stuff to new people at the gym. It is a deliberate attempt to make them think they need a trainer to show them the complex new ideas. Its bogus I don't car what guru x,y, or z says. Personally I would ban those damn balls from the weight room. And fuck all these personal trainers propugating this shit. They should be sued for malpractice. If your working on your plyometrics your a fag.

Well, Vespa, I was going to add my two cents to this thread, as I see this kind of stupid shit daily from the "trainers" at our local Bally's (trainers that are TRULY the bottom feeders of the personal training profession), but man, yuo said it all!

Most of these idiot trainers have little, and usually no prior training experience of their own, go to a three week in-house training course, much of which is slated to teaching them how to sell training packages to an unsupecting public. Then they go in for a Saturday and get "stretching certified," or "kickboxing certified," as though a few hours on a Saturday will teach them all they need to know about any of that.

Ok, I'll stop ranting now...

Yep, i had one guy come up to me last week at the gym while i was squating. i was warming up and had 2 plates and a 25 on each side, doing reps, going ass to the ground like PLATZ (kings of all quads) had me do and this 'trainer' said to my finance...while i was lifting...."you know he really shouldnt go that deep. he would recruit more muscle if he stopped at parrallel and his legs would grow more" ARE U FUCKING KIDDING ME? i saw in the mirror she gave him the weirdest look so i racked it and took out my head phones and said 'what was it taht you said to her?" he repeated himself and i pulled up my shorts and showed him my quads and said that i go deep...and pointed to his chicken legs and said thats what you get by doing sissy squats. The best part was my girl laughing right in his face...(shes like that) he turned bright red and walked away. i by no means have hamhocks for quads but i a few (mods) have seen my dieting pics and see that i do have good shape and decent size legs and it has all been b/c of deep squats and heavy presses. these trainers think they are certified b/c they just read the newest issue of FLEX magazine.

Ok guys I have said it before...

Ok guys I have been a Trainer before for 2 Local ( 5+ Location's) Gyms. I as a Trainer with 1 of these gyms was REQUIRED to go through Bosu Ball and core type training the first 3 sessions. I hated the crap out of it however if we did not do it we were written up and possibly lost our job. Before you judge you need to know the policies laid out by the CLUB for these guys...

This is why I will NEVER go back into Training unless I make the rules and don't have some California Surfer "expert" on fitness tell me what to do with a client the first few sessions. Ok rant over....

so they dictated how you should train? r u kidding me?

not kidding

Nope not kidding at all, this gym from what I understand has changed a little since I left there in 2005, have a bunch of guys that I have competed with that work for them still.

Bosu Ball and Balance Discs

I think these tools are great for certain things. Rehab being one. I for one, train athletes and use these for a lot hand/eye work. I.e. bouncing a med ball to one side and the other, right at them, roll on the ground etc..of course i do not do lifts on the things but they have their place..everyone at the gym is not about bodybuilding or powerlifting. if someone asked you to train their 17 yr old baseball pitcher would you put them under a barbell bench press? not the best idea. would you have them doing bb military presses? again, not a good idea.

yes but im not having them put a squat bar on their backs and have them do squats on a bosu ball...

NPC--i cant believe they dictated how you should train..they why interview trainers? just hire s'one who doesnt now anything and just tell them what to do. when i ran golds id interview and hire many dif. type of trainers b/c some ppl like that foo foo shit and some ppl like heavy ass lifting...so dif. trainers train differently....its hard to believe they are like that? tellin you how you should train or you'll be fired...i'd walk out

This is the sort of stuff that shits me to no end. All these mail order trainers telling the rest of the world we are wrong???? When all i ever see are Pencil necked, no legs, skinny armed, flat assed, scrawny, geeky looking mother fucker telling me about core stability!!!! I usually tell these wannabes that long before they were born we didn't have a core, we call it a trunk or torso. I ask them what the fuck they think happens when you lift seriously for years??? They say you might be strong but your core is weak. i then ask them to show me. They usually go over to a ball and do some balance shit and i laugh. They ask me try it, so I do with ease. I then get them over to a flat bench and ask them to show me a proper reverse crunch...........What they show me is far from the way it should be done. So I get them to do it my way and they can't even peel of five fucking reps. I go over to the ball and get them to do regular ab crunches. No biggie but then I tweek it to get the pelvis involved and whooops, they can't do ten!!!! I take them to an e-z curl bar put a fiver on each side and ask them to come outside to the carpark. Yep you gussed it........walking carpark lunges. I demonstrate and then it's their turn. Almost all of them either fall over sideways or can't make five steps. It is then that I tell them to go back to school and learn a bit more about the strength benefits of serious weight training and how it builds strong, stable bodies. I usually tell them that all this balnce work with weights in your hands is going to lead to someone getting hurt. It's pure bullshit and they leave with their tails between their legs.

Most of the trainers that I see are doing their clients a disservice. A lot of the people that are getting trained are middles aged men and women that are looking to change their bodies, not become bodybuilders or powerlifters. So I see these a-holes having their just off the street with no experience clients doing crazy shit. The majority of the people that are being trained need to have someone sit down with them and go over nutrition 101 and go food shopping with them. Then show the how to use the equipment and do basic movements. But that wouldn't make the trainers anymore money if their clients didn't need them anymore

Walking Lunges

What pisses me off in the gym are people who walk around the gym doing 5-10 pound dumbell WALKING LUNGES, with no regard for who or what they will pass. I'm doing bent over rows and this fool apparently doesn't care, and comes within a pubic hair of touching me and gives ME A DIRTY LOOK like I'm the one at fault for not giving in to his walking path.

I can't blame Ronnie for starting this, the guy did it outside with a barbell. It's these moronic alleged Personal Trainers who force thier "clients" to perform this idiotic movement which isn't going to give ANYONE benefit with 10 pound dumbells!!!

This is exactly why I do mine in the car park. You have the added benefit of dodgeing cars........Keeps you on your game:D
If i use dmbells they are the 90lb'rs. That hurts!! But bar will cause you to use stabilizers much, much more. Good little cardio session as well.

Lunges:

I think there should be a rule that requires you to be able to squat 2 times your body weight for at least 3 reps below parallel before you are allowed to do lunges.

Polymetrics:

these are great tools for athletes. Like your competitive downhill skier, college baseball player, etc. But the average guy in the gym just needs to lift and then do some cardio. The big thing at my gym is hopping up on the box. And of course hopping off the box. Frontwards, sideways, with a twist, you name it and they are hopping to it. I often think I'm going to snap and go all Sin City on them.... Grab one of theses guys by the wrist and tell him "Let's see you hop around now you little bastard".

This the most fun I've had in awhile! Usually I just bitch to Mom, who's much better at ignoring this criminal negligence than I am!
