What are some causes to insulin resistance? I'm currently training a girl that has a condition of insulin resistance causing her pancreas to release more and more insulin.

The result is this insulin surplus apparently triggers the ovaries to boost their androgen production. This is bad in that it can cause weight gain for her plus infertility. Not releasing eggs in her monthly cycle due to the high androgen in her system.

So what are some causes to insulin resistance?

Consistent high carbs for years dulls the insulin receptors leading to type II diabetis. The receptors are getting 'dull' so the body releases more insulin to make up for that which in turn makes the receptors more dull, etc. Insulin resistance.

Yep, it's treatable through diet. Something similar to Atkins for long periods of time can improve insulin sensitivity. Of course she would have to lower her carbs gradually to avoid hypoglycemia. Jumping straight into a full blown Atkins diet would probably be a bad idea.

People whom I trust say that all foods consumed to excess cause insulin resistance.Protein has been shown to cause it in studies.Saturated fat also.

FH,is she overweight and/or inactive?
The recommendations I've seen is to drop weight (saw something about a 10% drop in weight dramatically improving the condition) and increase activity levels.And of course eat low GI carbs,supplement fish oils etc.

No shes not over weight, she's about 21-22% BF, 5'3 100-110lbs. Lean muscle and great symmetry. Probably due to her high androgen counts. I'd consider her an intermediate natural athlete.

She misses some periods and I wondered at first if it "was" due to her low BF levels but thats not the case here. There not that low. She has been diagnosed with PCOS and its related to her insulin resistance.

Weird though that she's so lean and still has this issue. Pretty Girl too The infirtility is her big concern. Were attempting to get everrything regular again as diet and exercise are huge contributors.

She wouldn't look lean at 22%bf.
Maybe the test was done wrong.
Women have that nice toned look at 15%.
Lean would be even less.

Maybe she should try metformin for a while. It does miracles when it comes to taking care of insulin insensitivity.
