I am running constantly on a treadmill and doing heavy squats on leg day. I use a belt for the lower back but do not rap the knees. I really didnt want to wrap them because I like to use the least amount of support as possible. However I dont wanna get bad knees in the future. Anything tips to prevent injury..or am I just overthinking here? Knees been getting a little sore during the squats...possibly the shoes??? They are pretty cheap

Also, running is not healthy for the joints unless you are built to run. I'm guessing if you're a big ass bodybuilder, you're not built to run. :) Sprinting is ok, but not running for minutes at a time.

Bump this advice. Do your knees a favor and start doing cardio on an elliptical machine instead of a treadmill. Your knees will thank you....

Thanks guys ...and also what "muscle rub" would you suggest?

And for heavy squats…

I had a sports ortho doc tell me… do not squat deeper than parallel to save wear and tear on the knees

How did he/she define "parallel"? I can think of at least a few different definitions and they are pretty far from each other (top of thigh parallel to ground, hamstring parallel to ground, hip joint even with top of thigh at highest point, etc.).

And just my two cents but my experience is exactly the opposite; only when I squat below parallel (parallel as defined by hip joint being even with top of thigh) do I not have knee pain.

To the OP; knee sleeves definitely help. APT makes a great pair.

How much do you weigh? I ask because if youre doing distance running and youre over 260+ your begging for a knee injury...there are better options for big guys than distance, like sprints, they increase BMR dramatically and also increase explosive strength, as well as anaerobic and some aerobic endurance....

No where near 260 bro. Yea I am running sprints..sorry didnt clearify. But knee just feels a little pain mainly during the heavy squats. I mean i can handle it okay just wanted to know if there were some precautions to protect my knees. :)

He really didn't define it as such. The way he explained it to me was the deeper you go, the more the patella is pulled back tighter against the joint and the more wear you get, especially on the back of the patella. I am like you though, I prefer deep and always have. It seemed stopping higher gave me more knee pain. Go figure.

I feel exactly the same way as far as the depth of squats. I go asshole-low to-the-floor with my squats no matter how heavy I go, I usually don't go above 315 for reps though and this seems to be a smart move in and of itself as far as protecting the knees go. i also feel I get a much better development when I go the FULL range of motion. But again, I think this boils down to the individual biomechanics of each individual.

Also, my trainer, who happens to be the Mighty Mike Quinn here in Deerefield Beach, makes me NOT wear wraps because he says they are a good way to injure myself. He asks me "Are you a powerlifter??" "Then don't wear them, your joints do not get a chance to build up strength if you're always wrapping and providing the support from an outside mechanism.

try box or bench squatting and check your form go the PL section and research box squatting and resources those guys should be able to help you out...My knees used to hurt when squatting so I strengthed my posterior chain and the pain went away, I also doubled my squat and dealift in the process and added slabs of beef

Just curious RONJON, how wide of stance do you use and how low do you go, form personal experience I can not go very deep maybe a little deep than parallel with a little wider than shoulder wide stance, i can go down deeper with a wider stance but once I get to the bottom its almost like I can feel my joints unlocking. maybe try blocking your heels once also to see if that makes a difference.

Squat barefoot or with socks on, I go deep and heavy and never have had a problem.

Tommy Kono Knee Bands are excellent.. and will last long if you take care of it. I have used the bands since 04 on and off...and have had limited knee issues... you might want consider supplementing with Fish oil...and Flex Now Joint Formula..Flex Now has helped me immeasurably over the last year. Very good stuff.
