A lot of guys on here have acid reflux. I know what they say irritates it, but what really starts it for you? Carbonated sodas do it for me. What else may be the culprit? Any suggestions as to what it may be that I am not seeing? How many on here suffer from this?

All the time bro...your not the only one, it sucks. The main 3 culprits for me are coffee, soda & suprisingly Cod Liver Oil....talk about a nasty reflux back into your throat.

Yes

I do not want to resort to tums or another antacid. I just try to tough it out. Some nights the acid squirts out of my mouth like a squirt gun and goes up into my nose. I really have done ZERO research on this. I also burp all the time, that sucks.
 
It sucks, I was doubled over in pain from the burn most of the time...Nexium has done wonders for me..i take one EOD and get nothing...before I took it though, anything woudl fire it up..a glass of water, oatmeal was really bad.

someone once told me when i was experienceing it that it is stress related..

so i started smoking pot to relive my stress and viola, no more...
 
Acid reflux

Hey Phil,

I'm a friend of Hadi's and talked to you back in the day.
I just started getting acid reflux and it is brought on by acidic juices for me.
Especially sweet and sour when I have drink. I try too tough it out also because the antiacids neutralize the acids in your stomach and the pills actually turn the pumps off that secrete the acids. I saw a recent pic of you and with your size I would be apprehensive to take anything that interferes with the digestive process. That has to be counterproductive. If you start burping first and then get acid reflux that is normally stress related, a lot of combat vets with PTSD have those symptoms. The downfall to this is the anti-anxiety meds normally increase your cortisol levels. Smoking pot seems to do the trick for many and the side effects are desireable in most cases.
If you do not think this is stress related, the italians and latin americans use a tablespoon of olive oil daily. I would try to cure the problem rather than mask it.

Ive had it for years. It got to the point I was living on Tums and if I didnt have them handy at all times Id be hurting. They were everywhere-gymbag, work, car, home. It hurt alot when I trained, and especially at night. I started a bulk cycle a few years back-eating like crazy; Id be full at night and when I went to bed Id puke. That was the final straw-I went to the Doctor. I have a Hiatial Hernia, where you stomach protrudes through the sphincter at the bottom of your esophogus-and so the sphincter wont close
correctly and the acid runs back up the throat. Many of you/us with reflux have this as a cause.

Prilosec has changed my life. I do 10mg ED. At nite it acts up a little bit sometimes (nothing like it used to)-I should probably take another 10mg then too, but I dont. But still to eat pizza or Mexican at nite would be rough. If I eat that during the day I just maybe take a double dose and Im fine.
 
spicy foods after 7pm do it to me. especially beef products. i chew papaya enzyme tablets after i eat and that helps. also i stop eating spicy stuff at nite and keep my last meal to 630pm and then maybe a shke before bed. all this has work for me.

Believe it or not, but a teaspoon of prepared mustard works. at least it works for me.
 
Protonix= proton pump inhibitor

This a medication used as a prophylaxis. Meaning it is used to prevent the pariteal cells in the stomach from producing the acid. These (ppi) are usually for patients with persistent symptoms and with esophagitis. Alot of people mistake simple "heartburn" with GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) b/c heartburn id=s the most common symptom of GERD. Heartburn results when the reflux of gastric contents into the STOMACH. GERD results from reflux of stomach and duodenal contents into the ESOPHAGUS.

Heartburn acn be accompanied by regurgitation or water brash. Regurgitation is the flow into the mouth of a sour or bitter fluid that comes from the stomach. Water bash is the filling of the mouth with clear, slightly salty fluid. It's not regurgitated material, it's secretions from the salivary glands as part of protective, vagally (vagus nerve) mediated reflex from the distal esophagus.

Antacids can treat this by their function of "absorbtion" of the acid and the PPI (protonix for example) are used propylatically to prevent the production of
acid. I believe that antacids used prior to a meal (30min) are much more effective vs taking them 30 min after a meal. Just my 2 cents.

i learned about papaya years ago when my exwife was prego with my daughter. we took lamaz classes andthe teacher said that if the mother ate anything spicy to try papaya which was a nautual enzyme to cut out indigestion. so i been chewing about 6 after i eat a beefy or spicy meal.
it works for me and stops that late nite acid reflux.
 
in my nutrition class, my teacher said that most acid reflux can be stopped by taking a tablespoon or 2 of vinegar. i know this sounds contradicorty, take more acidic stuff. what actually happens is that there is not enough acid in the stomach to break it down, so it tries to force it out. give it a try, she says she has helped close to a hundred people by recoomending this.
 
your cardiac sphincter.....

u have four sphincters in your body only one (the last u have voluntary control of) the cardiac sphincter becomes relaxed and gastric juices can come up your esphoagus due the pressure in your stomache. numerous things can make or stimulate the sphincter to become laxed or uncontracted: caffiene, alcohol, chocolate, or an overly stuffed stomache with the person laying down. After u eat try to lat in a upright position to help gravity aid in the keeping of the gastric juices down. U can take many antacids and drugs that reduce the amount of HCL that your stomach produces but then u reduce the effectiveness of your stomach doing the job its suppose to. That HCL kills bad froms of bacteria, germs and virouses found in foods and drinks u consume. So do some food analyzation and see what causes this if u can b4 making an antiacid or a nueronal drung that slows or inhibits HCL production.

I think both theories are valid. I think it's partly physical and partly a reaction due to stress. I had this and an ulcer for alittle bit of time. Mine was caused by stress. I don't drink pop alot and stay away from coffee, don't smoke. Do it alot of spicy nasty shit and hot sauce and it doesn't add to it. So that's how I knew it was stress. So I 86'd the bitch causing the problems and imagine that all back to normal. Stress gone and problem gone, worked out great. But the things that I did to help the symptoms there for awhile was drink aloe vera juice from gnc or any other health food store. Papyya(sp) tabs and another tab to help aid digestion. Alot of tasteless food like egg whites and boiled chicken breasts.
 
This is something I've dealed with since my teen years.

It was so bad before, It made me so depressed that i hated living it was so bad. got sick after i ate and would have to throw up. It actually started to to make my mind sick, and I was perscribed an ant-depressant(remeron) and it helped (not cured) it. I was getting anxiety b/c i was so upset about my problem and the stress just made it worse so it was like a snowball effect.

I have been to several doctors and have had numerous test (stomach scoped, berium X-rays, and digetive scans). When I got my stomach scoped, it did show that I had a small hiedial hernia. but none of the medicines really worked for.

It is much better now Though, than it used to be, however, even today it takes me a very long time to eat my meals and breakfast is a very hard meal for me. I will say that periods of stress make the situation much much worse so try and stay stress-free. I also avoid sauce as much as possilbe and never drink alchohol.


As far as treating it this is what I believe. Products such as Nexium never worked for me. These drugs shut down the acid in your stomach which is vital for digestion. If your lucky enough for it to help with ur reflux your just subsituting that for another problem. and this should be a big concern for someone who eats alot. It Never helped with my reflex symptons anyway. I do know that it helps some peoples symptoms but in my opinion these medicines treat thy symptons and not the cause.

I've read in natural health books that vinegar does help this problem as Bigbird said. I've tried this and it does seem to work although I often don't do it. I'm gonna start doing this again A.S.A.P

I've very surprised to see that alot of you have this problem as well. I'm curious if weight lifting has anything to with this. My one doctor told me that my hernia could have been caused from doing very strenuos exercises such as Maxing out on lifts such as bench press, squat and deadlifts. He said something to the effect of when you have strong abdominals and you tense them. while your lifting it can shift your organs up which could cause stomach to push up into the esophogus(sp). He said it was probably more likely to happen since i started lifting w8s so early and my body was not matured. I am not sure if what this man said has any merit but I am starting to wonder since i'm reading that alot of you guys have this problem as well.

We have two high pressure valves, or sphincters in our esophagus; the upper esophageal sphincter (UES), which prevents aspiration and swallowing of excess amounts of air. The lower esophageal (LES), which is what we are concerned with here, prevents the movement of gastric contents to travel back up into the esophagus. Decreased or absent tone of the LES or inappropriate relaxation of the LES will result in GERD.

The most sensitive and physiologic test for the presence of acid reflux is prolonged esophageal pH monitoring.
