question for you hunters,
I recently picked up the hobby of hunting, I have always been a fisherman Salmon galore over in my woods (I know lucky me hahaha) saves me easily 1k a year in fish plus I enjoy just sitting out there with my dog reelin them in. Now I recently bought a 243 Winchester, My target LEAN PROTEIN SOURCES, rabbit is what I like to go for they a hard to hunt and quick little suckers plus very very lean protein source. but I am not sure of the nutrient quality of other animals, I am aloud to hunt and kill bear, cougars, elk, deer, turkey(i know this is great protein source), goat as well as smaller game. I try to live off my land as much as possible when its summer time I grow all my veggies and freeze whatever is left over into winter, I like to try not to make many trips to the food store.
any pointers as to what I should look for?? I hope to be able to get enough meat to last the year, and in my land that is quite possible. what should I be shooting? also if this thread offends any animal lovers I am sorry, but rest assure no part of these animals go to waste!

I think your caliber & weapon choice will decide what you can hunt. Shot placement is key w/ anything.

Yes, shot placement is key for any quick humane kill, plenty of sites out there to cover it.

To cover bear, deer, elk, if you are trying to avoid buying a bunch of different rifles I'd go with a 30-06, you can change the bullet weight depending on the animal but not really necessary.

I wouldn't use it on a rabbit though.

I just bought a Marlin 45-70 for boar. Not a long range gun though.

I am as new as it comes to the sport of hunting so I am in the early stages of learning, yea my plan is to stock up the freezer by the end of this month hopefully because where I live they are everywhere!!!! and yes The least suffering the animal does the better, what parts do you aim for? I have been going right below the ear and it seems to do the job nicely, I want to avoid hitting where the meat is.

Hey bro i have been hunting since i was able to walk (Use to follow my grandpa and my uncle with my toy gun, then with my bb gun and i got my first shotgun when i was 12). But truthfully you have a ton to learn if you are asking these questions. FIrst off a 243 is WAY too big for rabbits, too small for bear and they can kill dear if you are a good shot. Do yourself a favor as well as doing the wildlife a favor and go take a hunter safety course. That will teach you the basics of proper firearm usage. Then you need to hook up with an experienced hunter and learn how to hunt, where to shoot, how to trail wounded game, how to clean them and how to properly freeze the food.

personally for me I have hunted since the age of twelve and I use a 270 winchester for deer and elk, i hunt ducks, turkeys, dove, chucker, geese, and turkey with a regular old remington 12 gauge. a 30-06 or 270 can cover just about all of your hunting needs in my opinion.

you mind if I pm yah and pick your brain for a bit about hunting I would love to learn more because saying im a newb in the sport is a understatement ha.

Ya i shot a boar the other day with a .270. I agree with NSP.

i have .308 savage well its really for when it all goes down..a lil armageddon:star-wars lol but really vennasin is the shit!!

You guys are all way off the mark here, jesus..........

If your hunting small game, ie: rabbit, squirrel, woodchuck, etc. use a 12 gauge shotgun with #5 load. You have more of an area to work with

Same with deer, use a 45 or 50 caliber or a fucking shotgun with slugs guys..

the most VERSATILE weapon for hunting is a 12 gauge shotgun with chokes. You will probably need a modified and full choke for sure.

You can take out anything with a shotgun, period.

DITTO!...When he said 243 for hunting small game, I thought, damm, he must be a hellova shot!...You would have to hit em the head everytime, otherwise, NO MEAT TO EAT!...

The 243 would mnot have been my first choice but it is fine for game up to 500lbs out to 300 yds IF shot placement os correct and IF proper bullets are used. If you shoot a rabbit your going to loose alot of meat from the destruction that the bullet is gonna cause , if your gonna shoot small game for food then try for head shots as very little meat will be wasted.
On larger game the best shot is behind the should , this area holds the lungs and heart and will make for a quick kill if proper bullets are used.

The first thing I would do is get SEVERAL boxes of shells and a cleaning kit then go shoot the thing until your profecient with it. Then once you are a better shot find some anatomy charts of the game you plan to hunt and study them , you want to keep the bullets impact as close to the heart as possible.

Winchester Super-X loaded with 100gr Power Point bullets , these bullets bare well built so they will penitrate deep yet expand quickly to deposit it energy.

If your gonna hunt small game invest in a good 22 long rifle , like the Ruger 10/22 or Marlin model 60 , the ammo for these is WAY cheaper , they will allow you practice ALOT and will work very well for small game.

The trouble with a shotgun is you have to get alot closer and in areas that the cover is very open this can limit shot oppurtunities

Gunsmith, are you familar with the .222?...My brother swears by it?...

I used a 50 cal muzzleloader this year. The trouble with that is range. I feel comfortable with it out to 175 yards or so but would pick something else for longer range.

But I actually use a bow for most of my hunting. Now that is even less long range. LOL

The Marlin 60 can handle more than you think, as long as you are accurate and the shot placement is correct.

Sure pm me anything you want. KS

Its an amazing little round performance out of preportion for its size , I have an old XP-100 pistol chambered in 222 and to this day shoot it alot.

I think their are still some Bench Rest world records standing that were set with it.

The Marlin 60 is an outstanding rifle for the money , very accurate pretty reliable and not to heavy. I have over $2000 tied up in a custom Ruger 10/22 and while its very accurate , I can't shoot game any better than with my 1975 Glenfield (same as Marlin 60) , at 50yds with decient ammo and a scope head shots on small game are common

No doubt! My cousin liked to poach with his. It had enough kill power to lay those white tells out! *LOL*. And at the same time quiet as a mouse *LOL*. He would rubber band a paper towel over the end of the barrel, ah-lah -silencer! *LOL*. Nobody heard shiat! Good times!
