O/T Job help. Anyone else struggling?

Just out of curiousity, how old are you? I'm only asking because you seem to be confused about which way to go with your life. In your case I think if you are of age, the military might be of benefit here.

Only don't do that Rambo wanna-be bs, go Air Force. In 5 years, you can have you bachelors and maybe find your way in life as well. It's about how bad you want it. You might (meaning, YOU WILL) have to clean out your system and be able to pass a drug test but, again, when you get in you can probably get away with mild test cycles down the road. You might not be as big as you are now but, hey, life is full of sacrifices.

Good luck to you.

26. Military wouldnt be for me. Got a wife, couldnt leave her.

That's why I say Air Force. Once you get through basic and go to your specialty training she would be able to come with you if your training is one over a period of time (a year I think).

Get into satellites or something. They support the war in the Gulf from Italy and places like that. Obviously there is some risk, but that's life. You'd be able to provide a financially secure life for her and you both can use the five years to better yourselves and grow together so when you're ready to start a family.

But you are right, the military isn't for everyone. But if you can deal with it, it can be a stepping stone. I'm prior Army and believe me, Air Force is where you'd want to be if you decided to go military - use your mind and not your body. Save the physical workout for the gym!

Good luck to ya.

I think you have received sage advice. Being an echo tech or other tech in the medical field is a terrific start. Nice work environment, steady employemetn, ability to ply your trade in all areas of the country etc. I respectfully disagree with the gentleman suggesting the law field. It is far from recession proof. I just gave my staff attorney a 30% pay cut and he thanked me for it, for still being employed. Lawyers I have known for twenty years are getting killed, especially in the real estate field. Medical and alternative energy are great places to start.

The bigger issue is your stated desire to watch tv, eat, train, tan , etc. I personally feel to truly achieve your own success your motivations and understanding of what constitutes a "healthy" total life have to adjust to where the above mentioned desires are secondary. I truly would hate that lifestyle. It would leave me very unfulfilled. Think how much more exciting your life will be when you can add the fulfillment of a career and making a contribution with what you already get from bodybuilding!

As bs as it may sound, motivational tapes can be a good start. I occasionally pop in the Anthony Robbins type tapes while I do cardio just for a "reset" sometimes.

I appreciate your honesty, and I want you to realize that your ability for an honest assessment of yourself is going to be a big ally in helping you obtain your goals. Be at Peace.

IF you want to stay in the personal training field.. Then i would recommend doing in home training.. I have a degree in IT and do that full time now, but during college i did PT in a gym... After i developed a decent client base, I started training some of my clients one day at home and one day in the gym.. People are lazy.. And prefer training in the comfort of their own home.. I now train a handful of clients for $65 to $100 an hour in their home.. These are generally older clients 40+ in age and live in upper class communities.. After a couple of good clients you will have a bunch of referrals.. I often give them free sessions or discounts for buddy referrals.. Plus, you don't need alot of equipment either.. Adjustable dumbells, a couple exercise balls, jump rope, etc..

driving trains and pro basketball is great but not everyone can make it...:p try to get into a 10 month LPN course. pay is excellent and there is a real job shortage.

LPN= licensed practical nurse

sorry if i sounded pompous, i spent 12 years going to night school after work, all part time, all paid on my own. It sucked, but i now make a decent living, not rich by any means, just payin the bills. But you're right LPN's are cashing in big these days my GF finishes her course in 5 weeks and has job offers for $28 per hour plus they pay off all teh student loans if you sign a two year employment agreement, this is in the indianapolis area.

I dont think school is an option. Cannot afford anymore student loans, I need to work now. I think sales is gonna be my only option. But i've been hearing a lot about bartending. Guys who are working 8hr days making like 35k per year say they made that much doing part time bartending. I just dont know where to start with it.

I'm in sales and most sales jobs to start you need a degree. You can get in some other ways or low level sales jobs....queston are you close to getting a degree ?

ok, Ill save the speech I dont wanna know about the student loans then.

tough one dude....air force did me good you wouldn't be away from your wife very long....just thru training then she can live with ya. There are some good opprotunities to go to college that way

bartending can be good but keep in mind your gonna proly have to start as a back for a while not makin shit. If you are properly motivated you can get a bar tending job....don't know where to start? I would set mini goals everyday like go into and talk to two managers of where ever...ask to speak with them and ask for their advise how to get started no one else is gonna make it happen-remember that

i'll also bump that for the Air Force...great place to start. I think it’d be foolish of you to write it off w/o even looking into it - give it a google and see what people are saying

you can make some nice quick cash bartending but to make a career of it?? yea, not so sure on that, it seems more dead end than anything else - but quick cash is nice

might want to start w/ one of these if you're seriously looking into it and would like to work at a reputable bar and make good tips.
give that a google too

Is college necessary for this or is it like a trade school where you go directly for x-ray tech?

you will want to attend an accredited university or JC...if you do something like APOLLO COLLEGE, they do look down on that. I have 2 people that I knwo that did the APOLLO COLLEGE thing and cannot find work because the demand for techs is high, but that demand has been getting filled....so back in the day APOLLO COLLEGE was great, but now everyone is attending the JCs and Universities to pick up their tech degrees. 2 years is nothing to come out with FULL benefits and a good pay.

YEs the medical field will always be there.

Funeral homes and liquor stores seem to always do good during bad times...

I've been trying to find a new job for two years now. My company is being taken-over by a competitor, and I don't have a clue what's going to happen to my job. Hopefully this will be a good thing... they get rid of my crappy boss.

Then there is Everlast's business that has struggled all year. The last thing people want to spend money on right now is their concrete driveway or pool deck. He went from Christmas until April with no work at all. Then the worst day of the year... the stock market crashed and he gets a phone call that gave him the go ahead on a huge job. From there he's gotten more work in two weeks than he had all year.

You just have to set your goal and stick with it. Whatever you decided to do... just hang in there.

I have a friend going through the exact same thing right now.

The medical field is always needing people.

However what they don't tell you is that for xray techs, despite the listings in the papers and the "in demand" status, you are going to struggle to get a job right out of school. And if you do, it is generally around $16 per hour. (In South Florida). Everyone seems to want techs who are already cross trained and such.

And don't be swayed by these other courses that allow you to go and get your hours in before sitting for the exam. Get a two year degree. And when you do get employed, beg, scratch, kiss ass, whatever you got to do to get into CT or Nuclear Med training. Then your salary increases.

I have some friends that are in this field and believe it or not, they all say that there is actually discrimination against males in the field.

Well let me speak for a minute and see if anything I say makes sense. I understand your situation more than anyone here, I know this for a fact. If it wasn't for my girl I be crashing on buddies couches or back at my moms! ;) The PT thing in the midwest isn't going to cut it, unless you have undying motivation and a workable private area or in good with a gym. People in the midwest have a BAD sense of fitness and what they should get with a gym membership. Being in Michigan I say this more than anywhere else. I wan a powerhouse for almost 2 years and tried to do my own personal training thing. People have the wrong mind set for it, period! They think a gym should offer them this instruction with a membership and with the economy the way it is...........
A liquor store isn't going to do you any good unless you OWN it as its a minimum wage job. The local swmichigan/south bend news just did a special last night about the stateline liquor store and how sales are up more than 40%!!!! I bartend and quit do to lack of funds(tips) cause people aren't going out as much and when they do they tip less and less to save money for themselves! So bartending is hit or miss. You need to be in a college town with a busy night club. But to be honest most of these places are going to women as bartenders. Why? They've got boobs, boobs attract men which spend money, men spend money. Especially young dumb guys that think they have a chance at the end of the night. No one tips like an older woman, but it's hard to be in a position to seve them when you can't get into a place. A good place to look is a CASINO, have to have a clean back ground and get a gaming license which they can provide for you. Cousins wife bartends in the resturant there and makes about $5,000.00 a month. But remember she has nice boobs and is a lifetime bartender so she has regulars and what not. Casinos offer the chance of big money quick and people jump at that especially now. Sales is the best way to go now, but its tough to get into. Not having a degree doesn't help.
honestly the Air force or school would be my best advice. I'm 31 and still trying to finish my degree, can't afford classes this semester and had to go and find work. I'm at a shitty job but I know I'll have work for awhile. I work for a company that does property maintence on foreclosed homes, repos, and walk aways which obviously turn into foreclosures. We winterize, mow, landscape, do trashouts(filthy fucking job let me tell you)(could be on that show dirtiest jobs) The pay blows, they won't pay OT so to get the hours you have to work straight time or nothing after 40hrs. So tax's take alot of that. I have almost 85 fucking credits and nothing to show for it. Switched majors 3 times. Thought carring a football was going to pay my way. To be honest it didn't cause I didn't work hard enough for it and didn't respect it like I should have. Same as now, I'm looking for something I want to do bbut like you don't see it. There are many obsticles in our way but only we can make it happen. Sounds like you are your own worst enemy right now and that's tough cause the battle is all within your own head so no one can really give you the answers you want. I'm trying to finish my degree in nursing! Travel nurses are MAKING BANK right now and always have. Last time I checked Vegas hospitols was giving out $20,000 signing bonuses with a 2 year contract and paying for your move and a 6 months to a yr of rent to get you settled. Obviously it's tough on some to live there with all the temptation. My buddy is a truck driver and he also delivered gas, ethanol, and what not; his company just went belly up and got bought out and the new owner let everyone go. 18 guys out of a job with NO notice, 22 trucks repo'd or sent back. If you do drive a truck I seuggest getting in with a company that delivers technological parts and software. Just ran into a close friend from HS and he's doing this now, he just got out of the Air Force. He bought a 4,500 sq ft home in OKC and just bought 40 more acres of wooded land out that way. Do I really want to be a Nurse?? I don't know, I like the medical field, pay and hrs, and benefits are nice. I want to coach college football but I've been turned down on three jobs, why?? Not qualified, nope not it. With experience, knowledge, and love of the game I'm good to go but I don't have a degree so no one will higher me. Can't really afford to take a HS assistant position as if it does pay it's for nothing and takes away hrs from my other shitty job that I work. So all I can say is find something that you can tolerate as some $$$ is better than NO $$$ and work on that degree one class at a time if ya have too. I'm with ya bud, I've signed up for the military twice and never showed up for the bus, I've been through school and not finished, not sure what really motivates me at this point, had more jobs than I can shake a stiick at, more certifications and what not that didn't lead to happiness or the big bucks. But ya just have to keep moving foward. Many times we take a few steps back to get foward, at least I know I do, we just can't stay taking steps backwards and hopefully one day there will be more steps fowards than backwards! Don't know if this makes sense or you can follow it but there's more out there liek you than you know.

I have some friends that are in this field and believe it or not, they all say that there is actually discrimination against males in the field.

Hell yeah there's discrimination against males in the medical field. There are less than 20% males in the nursing carreer field. I had the director of nursing at my JC give me a batch of shit about wanting to be a nurse and taking classes. She got me so pissed off that I was dumb and let her win that I walked out. She did nothing but talk shit to me and made me feel like I'm doing something wrong. That was my own fault though for not being smarter about it and psuhing through the BS. Just have to work harder.

But it's there for sure, many woman try to do there best to keep men out of the hospitols.

Great advice. Thanks to all. I think as of now im gonna try and start somewhere with office work,etc.. and maybe work up to billing and stay with the place. Then after years I can maybe work up to HR. I dont need a fortune. $20 per hour and im content, but thats wayyyy harder than I thouht it would be nowadays.

Best advice is to go back to school...there is just no two ways around it, otherwise your just going to find one shit job after another and in 2-3 years be out looking for something else to do.

You will never find anything you like, with out an education...whether you have time or not you make time...just a class here and one class there till you finish.
Bar tending? sales? if your heart aint in it you'll get tiered of it quick and then bam !!!
your right back here saying the same shit on another "I cant find a good job" post in a few months...Go take a class..one class at a time...one semester at a time and before you know it....you're where you want and need to be financially.

Medical field is the best as far as time in school vs. income after graduation...
Best bets are Licensed practical Nurse( 10-12 months of classes) income $18-$20+/HOUR depending on experience.

Registered Nurse (two year associate degree to get the education to sit for the national registered Nurse boards test) Starting pay lower 40Grand to over 70-80 Grand
and depending if you go on to get your BSN or masters you can make 6 figs a year...ie: A Nurse anesthetist makes 150,000/year plus.
Years of edu. 4 years plus 3 years additional class and training.

AND if you get a job at any hospital say in housekeeping/ security gaurd or dietary in the hospital ..the hospital will pay full tuition if you promise to work there for a set number of years after you get your LPN/RN license

X-ray and other techs..not so good... there just isnt that many techs needed in a hospital/clinic as there are need for RN's and LPN's

OR: go to Truck driving school and get your CDL-A license. Your gone over the road for 2-3 weeks at a stretch but you can make 50K your first year...and gain 30lbs around your waist your first year as well...LOL
There simply are no maore factory jobs like in the 60-70's if your not in the medical field or construction field then you need to go back to school...for anything..just get over the fact school takes time, in these times you do what you have to do to survive.
Do you really see yourself working at some Bar till your 65-70 ? or trying to sale something when your 70 years old...Thats as stupid as trying to run for President when your 72...way to old..LOL

Look's like you're looking for an easy way out. Nothing in life comes easy bro. Sorry but that's the way it is. You have to sacrifice. I am surprised your wife isn't on you about doing something. I could see if you're 20 years old but you're not. You're a married man. My wife is constantly pushing me to actualize my potential in a good way. Go to back to school and give up serious bbing for a while and get an education. That's the only way you're ever not going to struggle. You have to earn every inch and it's harder now than ever. It took me 6 months in a good economy to find a decent job with a 4 year degree. I worked at wal-mart unloading trucks for 6 months. I wasn't too proud.
