THURSDAY, June 8 (HealthDay News) -- A slight reduction in daily calorie intake may do more than just help control weight -- it may also slow aging, according to a new study with rats.

The scientists found that feeding rats 8 percent fewer calories a day and moderately increasing their activity levels extended the rodents' average lifespan and significantly reduced the negative effects of cellular aging on liver function and overall health.

An 8 percent reduction would amount to a few hundred calories in an average human diet, while moderate exercise would be equivalent to taking a short walk.

"This finding suggests that even slight moderation in intake of calories and a moderate exercise program is beneficial to a key organ such as the liver, which shows significant signs of dysfunction in the aging process," study senior author Christiaan Leeuwenburgh, an associate professor of aging and geriatric research at the University of Florida College of Medicine, said in a prepared statement.

The study appears in the current issue of Antioxidants and Redox Signaling.

Previous research found that a 20 percent to 40 percent reduction in calories slowed aging damage in animals and humans. This study suggests that even small cuts in calorie intake can have a major beneficial impact on health.

That's not good news for bbrs...taking in 4-5k cals a day..or even more.

Geez thank goodness my cals are extremely low. I never eat anywhere near 4-5k cals Danm Big Willay do you really eat that much

off season, 4500 cals...8 meals

I'm 260 lbs right now

I don't want to get old anyway ;)

yeah sorry about that, you don't want to hear about me eating dbl cheesburgers and such.

Well I beleive this, and already figured it was true. It won't change much for my eating habbits though, I don't each too much any way.

This has been claimed for years, supposedly there is a link between metabolism and aging kind of makes sense, Your body is like a car its not how old it is as much as how many miles you have put on it that counts

are those people in the study working out like BBers?

are they sedentary?

somehow i think a hard training athlete who eats 3000+ calories will be healthier than a couch potato who eats only 1500 calories... maybe its just me

if the study was done and both groups were couch potatoes, then i could def see how it would be true...

I'm a firm believer in this idea. So much food, year after year can't be good for the intestines, kidneys and liver...not to mention the pancrease, gall bladder etc. Cholitis, diverticulitis come to mind.
We've had discussions on here for years about bloated guts and the possibility of this result coming from Insulin vs. HGH/IGF vs. gear etc. I put my bet on the excessive amounts of calories top level bodybuilders (who have eaten this way for years) as the main culprit.

Without resulting to a continuous infusion of IV amino acids, what's the next most easily absorbed/digested form of a complete "essential" amino acid food?

Whey...in/out so fast.
Casein(sp?)...good but not high on the PER scale.
Eggs...whites vs. yolkes. Pain to have to cook, chew, swallow etc.
Beef and chicken...worse than eggs in the cook, chew, swallow dept.

Phil might have something here with the Liquid Beef "predigested" aminos...hmmm. Just wish they weren't so damn expensive when compared with servings per container of other protein products.

Maybe... **broken link removed**
Not a board sponsor (hope no rules are being broken here) but a good way to get your 300-400g per day of easily digested "quality" protein but again, expensive!$$

When a guy has to consume 8-10 meals per day to become competative and then continue to eat that way to "stay" competative...somethings gonna give. It's the Id vs. Ego vs. Super Ego battle that bodybuilders eventually face with each successive competition.

Id says, "Come on, try a little more this season. Up your doses you pus! What's his face is on blah, blah, and blah". Add this and that, eat more! Fuck everyone who doesn't support me. I don't need em anyway.

Ego says, "Maybe but only if the blood work comes back ok".

Super Ego says, "What the hell am I doin this for? It aint a sport, Im standing up on a stage in a nut sack for the whole world to see, I have no life outside the sport, my wife/gilfriend doesn't understand me, I'm misearble/moody and a bitch to be around especially before my comps. My wife is sick of applying my tans, shaving my ass etc. I'm constantly paranoid about getting popped by customs and having a criminal conviction on my record for life. Can I have kids? Hows my kidneys? Did I do any long term damage to my heart or liver? What effect will all this mass consumption of food have on my longevity? I sure hope I'm not succeptible to tumor growth, after-all, I'm using IGF/GH in my cycles these days...and yet I have no intentions of ever stepping on a stage???

Hahaha...but what the fuck do I know!?

A 2 min search on Google...many more exist not to mention scientific/peer reviewed journal studies.

The "ID": "I got one thing to say, it's better to burn out then fade away."
The "Ego": "Hmmm, maybe there's something going on here that I should take a closer look at."
The "Super Ego": "What am I doing to myself"?!
