Saw a powerlifter with strange injury last night

So I was at the gym last night and started talking to this guy... turns out, he used to be a powerlifter. We talked a bit and then I mentioned that lots of pl's have injuries and what not, and asked if he had any. He showed me his neck, with a huge vertical scar running along his spine from about the upper neck to upper mid back. He said he was squatting one day, and the bar rolled forward crushing his upper spine. This is a pretty crazy story. I'm not sure what the point of this post is besides warning people to be careful on their big lifts. I thought it was an interesting story, too.

Sounds painful. I actually screwed up my lower back doing heavy squats a few weeks ago. It's nothing that rest, ice and the chiro can't fix.

I wonder if he was squatting high bar? Low bar, wide ass powerlifting squats give you a more vertical back, if the bar goes anywhere it should be down. Your arms pushing the bar into your back is all that holds it there.
