Sleep apnea questions

Back in 2019, I got tested for sleep apnea and was told I don’t have it.

However, I’m not very convinced. My oxygen saturation % runs below optimal around 93-95 and my hematocrit has been around 57-60 for many years.

Recent echocardiogram showed normal heart function so I can rule that out. I don’t suspect lung problems but I suppose a specialist could check.

I’m going to get another sleep apnea test since it’s been four years but I don’t snore and I can sleep 6-7 hours (while waking up twice to piss)

If anything, I might be borderline so a CPAP could help regardless.

My question is to you all is did you notice lower oxygen % pre CPAP if you measured it and did you tend to have a higher hematocrit? Did these things improve once you started using a CPAP?

ive never had high crit, and never had oxygen saturation issues before i got my cpap

but i would wake up each morning feeling like someone beat me with a sack of potatoes while i slept

idk if this answers your question though :/

Touched on this a bit in the other thread. Mine oxygen sat was low before CPAP then increased.

Pre CPAP I used to have to dump blood 3x a year at least because of H&H. With CPAP therapy I do it about 1x a year. It still will run high but not like 56+ prior to CPAP use.

How is your daytime energy? Do you nod off while driving?

Daytime energy is fine. Nothing seems off or anything. I don’t doze off when driving if I slept enough the previous night.

It’s weird because I don’t seem to have too many of the classic subjective symptoms of apnea

Have you had a CPET test done by chance? I love your post on here about heart health so sure you may have.

I’m about to go through the whole sleep study again myself. I unfortunately do have severe obstructive sleep apnea. It’s been controlled for the past several years.

Normally I’ll experience 5-10 events per hour while using my CPAP for 7-9hrs. However, it’s been creeping up these past few months. I’m now getting 30-40 events per hour. This has made me feel pretty lethargic throughout the day.

I start the night at 6cm/h20 and I have my top end setting at 17cm/h20.

So I’m looking to undergo the Inspire surgical procedure and use the CPAP if it’s still needed.

I was mid30’s when I got the CPAP, snored really bad, but never felt exhausted. So I never thought I had OSA. After the first night with the CPAP my life changed. I never knew how tired I really was!

Do you dream at night??? I couldn’t remember the last time I had a dream. First night with the CPAP I had several that night!!!!

Thanks I appreciate that and no I haven’t done that test. I didn’t really even consider it but now I am thinking I should inquire about doing one.

Yea I definitely dreamt last night. I actually remembered it too which is rare.

And cool that you felt like a new person after the first night with the cpap!

It’s the longest 10-15 minutes of your life, but great test for all athletes IMO.

My sports cardiologist has me do them twice a year with my strong family history of heart issues. It would give you a better picture of the low oxygen likely.

I suppose I can send a message to my cardiologist in the health portal. I just saw him 3 months ago for an echocardiogram so he will probably discourage it but I can insist.

Did you have an at home test or in a clinic? My results were a bit different from each. In clinic showed worse.

If borderline pushing into sleep apnea you could go to a dentist that specializes in TMJ/TMG and they'll 3d print a mouth piece that prevents your jaw from falling back in your throat. Might be worth looking into.

Just curious where you live? And what the quality of the air is over there? I don't know much about the subject, but doesn't the oxygen content of the air effect your hemo levels? I'm just throwing that out there for you to think about other things that may be at play in your situation

South Florida now. I don’t think it’s part of it.
