He came to my gym yesterday for over five hours doing a Universal Nutrition add. What a nice guy. Open book attitude with any questions also. I did ask him about the DC training and he said that if he didnt quit it it would have hurt him. He said "it's tuff going up and up every time". This was his total reply reguarding that question. I asked about the diet and he said it's 5000 cals a day about 400 of that is carbs. Meats, veggies, fruits, protien drinks. He said he trains three times a week,16 sets per body part, most of the sets are to failure. He also said he was happy with how he looked at the Nats and that he really thought he was on until others told him that he may be a little flat. The guy is HUGE. He said he was 244 at the Nats but he was alot bigger yesterday. I'm guessing. I believe the guy was sincere. He really spoke to me about stuff instead of just barking out answers. I just want to add those Animal guys are a bunch of good guys as well. All nice, frendly dudes. One more thing, Steve said he wants to come in 15lbs bigger next year at the Nats. 15lbs? He said this like 15 lbs of muscle in one year is no big deal.

Steve carries a lot of size in the offseason. I saw him in the 280's before his wedding and he impressed the hell out of me, and I've seen just about every top bodybuilder in person.
I'm willing to bet he lost some muscle trying to get into better condition this year compared to last year, so some of that 15lbs will be muscle that he already has....but won't lose this time.

He is a nice guy, I'm glad you had the chance to speak with him. I'm sure he's bummed about his placing right now, but I've never seen a time where he wasn't friendly and willing to answer someone's questions.

from everything i hear, it seems that Steve is one of few bright spots in the sport in terms of character and hard work....I was pullin' for him to get his pro card--- guess it will have to wait for now...

You obviously know him well. Everything you have said is exactly what he said during the corse of our conversation. I hope nothing but good luck finds Steve. The info he gave out is what alot of guys are charging dollars for.

Said it would have hurt him huh? Interesting...wonder if any other DC bbers feel or felt the same way?

I'm doing well....in over my head with school, but otherwise I'm good.

Good showing at the Nationals! Can't believe how strong every class was this year.

I don't think so. What I've found is that if I train DC for too long, my joints get achy and I burn out mentally along with my CNS. I think this could be avoided by blasting for shorter periods of time. Many people try to blast until they go backwards at the end.

One thing I admit to doing is rotating more volume in to my training. I'll do DC for 3-5 months, then throw a month or two of higher volume with higher reps. I've also been trying to experiment with fascia stretching on my own in various ways for my biceps and (before my injury) chest.

The trick is to know when to end the blast and how long to cruise for.

If somebody can explain to me the theory of detailing a muscle with striations versus adding blocky mass, I'd love to hear it. I hate when people say "this details the muscle" and "this adds mass". Mom and dad gave you your shape. Get it bigger. Make yourself leaner.

Striations are like santa claus. You're a good boy all year with your training, hoping that those squeezes and leg extensions all year are going to bring "striation claus" on "competitionmas day"... but you got a lump of coal because you're legs still suck from not squatting heavy enough.

1. You need to be lean first to see any at all
2. It is how the muscle lays.......genetics....you cant get them by squeezing or training....
3. You have 2 choices......build more muscle or do not build more muscle....insertions and origins with bone length and thickness determine blocky or not.

Its really simple....raise the reps.

Phil and Dante are right. I like the style of Phil and Dante. Trainers tend to feel the need to over explain things to the point of being wordy. They assume the "smarter" they sound, the more value they have. Ever notice how short some of their answers are? Straight to the point... and they actually make a definitive point. Certainly no sugar coating.

I'd like to see what would happen to Trey Brewer, Seth Feroce, Zinjun Croon, and Antoneil Champagne if they all took a year long off-season and applied DC training. Trey would actually get top 3, Seth Feroce could battle another DC guy for the 202 class every show, Zin Croon and Anthoneil would easily be pros.

Could you elaborate a little more about what have you been doing stretch wise. I always like new ideas about fascia stretching

What I have found that works for me is having a very good warm up routine, a do more now to warm up my shoulders and it has made a huge difference.

But, I bang out Dc and when I feel like something is up I will cruise but another tool I have found that works fine for me is to:

- lighten up the weight just slightly then slow the negative down and usually I can blow right through the previous pr and have no pain or issues & doing this usually nabs me another few weeks.

Then I either do it again or usually rotate in a new excercise. Doesn't have to be huge, maybe instead of hammer bench I will do a slight incline bench.

I have also found that if I don't jump too much in trying to add weight and rather add a rep or so for a few weeks I do better.

Just some thoughts...
