After reading excerpts from the Mitchell Report stating that there have been 20 years of Steroids in baseball I just wanted to shed light that it has been around alot longer than that.....

Below is a 2005 article from USA Today interviewing Tom House, renowned private pitching coach to many many lajor league Pitchers.....

I had the pleasure to meet him a handful of occaisions while I ran and indoor hitting and pitching facility. He taught me his Functional Fitness baseball training protocol so that I could use it for my own career and teach it to my kids in classes....He is an extremely intelligent no nonsense guy who has wrote many books and co authored more as well...One of them being: Stronger Arms and Upper Body.....one that I bought many many years ago when I was trying to comeback from 3 wrist surgeries

He Lays it out pretty good.....I thought you guys might like to read this...

Former pitcher Tom House describes past steroid use
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Former major league pitcher Tom House used steroids during his career and said performance-enhancing drugs were widespread in baseball in the 1960s and 1970s, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Tuesday.
House, perhaps best known for catching Hank Aaron's 715th home run ball in 1974 in the Atlanta Braves' bullpen, said he and several teammates used amphetamines, human growth hormone and "whatever steroid" they could find in order to keep up with the competition.

"I pretty much popped everything cold turkey," House said. "We were doing steroids they wouldn't give to horses. That was the '60s, when nobody knew. The good thing is, we know now. There's a lot more research and understanding."

House, a former pitching coach with the Texas Rangers and co-founder of the National Pitching Association near San Diego, is one of the first players to describe steroid use as far back as the 1960s.

He was drafted in 1967 by the Braves and pitched eight seasons for Atlanta, Boston and Seattle, finishing his career with a 29-23 record and 3.79 ERA.

House, 58, estimated that six or seven pitchers per team were at least experimenting with steroids or human growth hormone. He said players talked about losing to opponents using more effective drugs.

"We didn't get beat, we got out-milligrammed," he said. "And when you found out what they were taking, you started taking them."

House said he gained almost 30 pounds while using steroids, blaming the extra weight for contributing to knee problems. He said the drugs helped improve recovery time and conditioning but did not add velocity to his fastball.

"I tried everything known to man to improve my fastball, and it still didn't go faster than 82 miles per hour," House said. "I was a failed experiment."

House said he stopped using steroids after learning about the long-term harm they could cause.

"I'd like to say we were smart, but we didn't know what was going on," he said. "We were at the tail end of a generation that wasn't afraid to ingest anything. As research showed up, guys stopped."

What I found most annoying about the Mitchell report is that it pretends to be concerned about the players' heatlh, and yet ignores the most serious drug abuse in baseball: amphetamines. I wonder how many players' health have been compromised b/c of taking stims to keep up with the schedule.

Such is politics, I guess.

Maybe that they think it will level the playing field? Obviously it was level before everyone was/is juicing. I guess Canseco hit the nail on the head.

That report should not have listed a single name if it could not list every player in MLB that ever used steroids. There are guys out there smiling from ear to ear because they got away with it. It is unfair to those named and what did that really accomplish? It is all hearsay, no one tested positive, yet this Mitchell chose to soil their names. Bud Selig is a coward.

Totally agree. I had the opportunity to talk to a ML baseball player in the 80's. I actually helped him to move. This is a well known player who shall remain nameless. He told me exactly what he was using and he and I had a long discussion on gear. Back then it wasn't as big a taboo. Nobody cared. Anyway he told me that most of the team used or had used. No big suprise. This has been part of sports since the 60's in a massive way in all sports.
I always get a laugh when the media refers to the 90's in baseball as the "steroid era". They are so clueless. They want to erase baseball records of steriod users so I guess they have to remove virtually all records for the past 40 years. How naive they are. What a joke.

wtf??

this is so stupid! who cares if they use stuff? its their decision. if they get it legally....let them be. i know i dont want to see sports that are not exciting. i want to see things that you think humans cant do. something amazing. dr. fred hatfield (dr squat) told me to my face in 1994..."all profesiaonal, olympic and elite atheletes use drugs. all of them." he was right.
shit pga guys are using drugs, tennis players, runners , bikers, even cross country skiers!!! so what the hell, you gona make all sports lame and un exciting to watch while the rest of the world gears up and does great things?
hmmmmmm lest see, maybe things will chance. but i think guys will find another way to beat tests and still use drugs!!!
lucian

So are they going to start changing or *'ing all the record books, taking Cy Young awards away and such like Olympic medals???

they wont change any records and wont put an asterick next to anything. All this does is get congress of MLB's back. Thats all this was intended to do at the expense of Roger Clemens and a few others. If they didnt do this then congress would still be on Bud Seligs back and maybe force his resignation. So in a way you could say this was a way for Selig to save his own ass.

I dont think they will put an * they instead will have a disclamer page that states that "In the pages you are about to read take into account the different eras segragation, all day games, 162 game season, steroid era, etc. all have grey areas. the best thing is that HGH is not considered in the steroid era, because they cant come up with a test to prove your on it. HAHAHAHA. As David Justis said if HGH was a pill he would have taken it. My opinion is they say its not a fair playing field but I'll bet 85% MLBers are using that is a fair playing field. These douchbags are making millions a year and can make there own decions who need an old ass senator telling anyone what to do? Kreep

Don't you understand. They're trying to protect the children.
