TIL Ronnie Coleman gained 40lbs of stage weight between the 2002 and 2003 Mr. Olympia

Ronnie ended up in a wheel chair and on crutches for life he trained so hard. Better yet, he said it was worth every minute of it and wouldn’t change a thing if he could do it over.

Sure Ronnie had genetics, but show me a pro today with that worth ethic.

It’s going to be a while IMO before anyone is willing to go where Ronnie did to become and stay Mr. Olympia on any level.

People confuse “training hard” and “training with loose, sloppy form with lots of damage to connective tissues”.

What about strict form and minimal joint impact is training less hard?

He threw weights around. Plenty of guys training to and beyond failure without destroying themselves.

Completely true. That’s why I don’t train like Ronnie did, but I train hard as hell.

If Ronnie stuck with squatting and deadlifting 405 for 20+ reps a set like he could have - instead of doing 800 for a single or double, he’d be so much better off.. probably still mobile

Probably would have gone on to win more than 8 Olympias if he trained wisely
 
does anyone have any other examples of insane 1 or maybe 2 year transformations in the sport? Perhaps starting a new thread for most epic transformations would be better. But I am still mind blown by the difference in these Ronnie pics

Exactly. He was 290 or so hard as nails a few weeks out. I saw the pictures Chad took at that time in the mod forum at Mayhem. He wanted Ronnie sliced and diced so he drew him down below 260. Still an impressive transformation the next year.
 
Nobody trained as hard as Ronnie a few close ones like Branch and Johnnie J.
Cutler trained like a Tasmanian devil with all those sets and reps. But true to his word Ronnie said "Everyone wanna be a bodybuilder, but don't nobody wants to lift no heavy ass weight, but I'll do it!"

you cant say its just genetics because why would they all of a sudden go into into overdrive just that 1 year?

Roman Fritz is, in my eyes, another great example of someone who manages to get the most out of the weight he uses when training. Compton as well.

As @TheOtherOne55 mentioned in his log as well, Nick has been implementing this a lot lately too.
 
I kind of like the nick walker training style personally, and been incorporating it more into my lifting routines where I check the ego at the door, maybe lower the weight a little then overemphasize the slow, controlled reps with a massive stretch and a good contraction. Less risk of injury too, plus it just feels better. Feel like I'm getting more muscle activation and better pumps
