I checked one of these places out, and it was pathetic. Nice equipment, but I thought it was a judgement free zone, and here Im getting judged for being a bodybuilder. Here's the email I wrote them after i was asked to leave for grunting.

I recently checked a planet fitness out and I must say, Im unimpressed. While you have put together a nice gym, your "judgement free zone" contradicts itself. Why is it if Im training hard to get results and Im under say, a 450lb squat and I let out a grunt, your precious lunk alarm goes off??? I thought you had a judgement free zone, well it's quite apparent that you judge people who train hard to achieve desired results. You offer candy and pizza and have the word fitness in your title. Im sorry, but neither of these foods have anyplace in a fit and healthy lifestyle. I can assure you you will not recieve my business. That includes the money that I often spend on memberships, apparel, and drinks at the gym bar. I hate to inform you, but if it weren't for bodybuilders, you wouldn't have gyms the way you have them today.

Good day.

Good for you, bro. You want to get in on my planet fitness prank calling? http://www.professionalmuscle.com/forums/showthread.php?t=50111

absolutely true

I hate to inform you, but if it weren't for bodybuilders, you wouldn't have gyms the way you have them today.

i would imagine that concept is beyond their comprehension

Maybe you should sue them, for judging you and making you feel umcomfortable. Along with discrimination.

I'm not an attorney...but you know...I've thought about this very issue in the past. They contradict themselves to appease "those who are not of us", so we are uncomfortable and feel discriminated against for being who we are.

If an obese person were to go into a hardcore gym, and was asked to leave because of their issues, I guarantee you a law suit would be issued.

I wonder what happens if you're in the bathroom pushing out a giant redwood of a turd and you happen to grunt a little. Do they bust in the stall and kick you out? Hmmm, that's worth finding out.

Wow..they actually asked you to leave because you grunted? Everyone should boycott a pompous gym like that.

grunt

i have trained very heavy in the past and never found the need to grunt, scream, or breath like a choo-choo train. if you must train at a place like that just don't grunt. i've always thought guys that have to make silly noises when they train are just trying to call attention to themselves so everyone will see the "big" weights they are using.

I used to think the same thing, and then I started doing squats/dl's and stuff and have had a few uncontrollable grunts. They just happened, and I don't know why. And it's not because I was using big weights, I was squatting 185. :) I personally don't want people looking at me when I'm squatting these puny weights. But I'm grunting, anyways. Go figure. I think it's the squat itself causing the grunt... it feels like someone grasping my diaphragm.

i guess

i guess air can be forced out by the diaphram but that would indicate the lifter is holding his breath during the exertion of the movement. that can drastically increase intracranial pressure by the way. not good as brain injury could occur. one should always exhale during the hardest part of the lift.

Grunting during a hard lift of deads or squats is reasonable - given it isn't a ridiculous attention drawing scream for the sake of screaming.

The gym I recently have been at is a very serious lifters place - a Powerhouse - it even has a "Scream Room"!!
But of course there is one jackarse who set up a massage table there and now he feels like he has a right to scream at every lift and tell everyone how to workout.

It's pretty sad when the guy is machine rowing a plate and a quarter and has to scream so loud each person that walks in starts asking WTF!??!!?

The manager actaully told him to get in the back room to scream or get out.
It was that ridiculous - - and this is no PLanet Fitness by any stretch.

Though I do agree there should be grounds for discrimination and legal action against PF - or at the least false advertising.
A judgement free zone - - it's a joke!

mmm hmm. What you say makes sense. I wonder if my head could explode? haha. I will try exhaling out of the bucket instead of trying to be the iron lung.

I've worked in the gym business since '83 and never liked attention getters. However, there are times I'm busting an absolute nut, pushing myself beyond. Noise (not excessive) just happens. Being as judgemental as you have presented yourself to be, may I suggest the Planet Fitness Black Card membership?

I disagree with this.

I do as Sess. I put that in my email because the gym is not geared towards serious trainers. For us, we can have this stuff every so often, but if you're going to train when you're severely out of shape, Id be skipping the free pizza and candy. Just my opinion.

Yup, I got booted for talking to myself saying "lightweight" prior to my squat then the grunt during my first rep is what sealed the deal. It's just sad that people are that self conscious that serious trainers can't do these tried and true second nature acts. IE: grunting, talkin to yourself, etc.

What cracks me up is if you go into my gym, Im the most courteous person their, and Im the big guy who sticks out, grunts, says the little saying before hitting a heavy set, etc. But, Im the only one who will re-rack his weights, strip every plate off of something I used, wipe up my sweat off of benches, hell, if the place is really crowded, I'll even go to the bathroom to fart!!!!!!! But, it's the big mean bodybuilders who are ruining the place.

What these people at PF don't get is that most of us really don't give a damn about anyone in the place except for ourselves and our training partner. We're not judging anyone in there as we're in there for ourselves. Oh well, I will continue to enjoy being a minority in the "Fitness" world of today's gyms.

Thats all good but you can bet that letter gets discarded without even being read. They could care less about a bodybuilder and all there hypocritical practices. What they do care about are all the lard asses that sign a contract just to make them feel like they are doing something good and dont come back for 6 months. That $10 still goes right in there pocket regardless.
All the things you stated in your letter i said face to face to the owner of my planet fitness and all i got in response was " well if you dont like it, go somewhere else and lift" . Its not like i have a choice around here so i bit my lip and moved on.
Good luck with that.

i went to on in my area when they 1st opened and i kid u not they wouldnt even talk to me they are into serving woman and little men they have signs up that have body builders in tank tops holding a gallon of water and says not allowed

you may think what you want......

You guys crack me up. Why is any serious BB even going to Planet Fitness? You know they don't like your type  That club is set up for people that aren't serious about working out. I think personally they mis name their club, it should be called PLANET WUSSY!:D
