Was just readin about this in an old musclemag i got. People who look in the mirror and no matter how great they look or how much theyv progressed, they feel small and unhappy with their physiques. I think we all have it here to a point thats why we are never satisfied and constantly strive for more and more improvement whether it be strength, appearance, or whatever. I think i am guilty of having this, whenever i look in the mirror i have some standout bodyparts but all i can focus on are the weaknesses. Guess thats what it takes to be a great bodybuilder though, search and destroy all weaknesses! This brings me to another favorite quote... your only as strong as ur weakest link.
 
I have a chronic muscle dysmorphia big time. I felt small all the way from 75lbs all the way to 230lbs. And I'd feel small at 300lbs! I know for fact I would. SO at least there is no denial here. :)

Everyone else always comments on when I am making serious gains, but I never seem to notice any of it, but for what the scale tells me, in my eyes though I just will never be at the level I want to be.

I dunno about that one. Not 300lbs. I will NEVER give up my aethetics in exchange for mass and size. Not happening. If i couldnt step on stage with my waist in the range of a TIGHT 30inches id feel like i looked like shit. Small joints, small waist, solid X frame are the way to go!

I cant bring myself to take layoffs, even though my common sense tells me its
what I need.
 
yep I definitly do...

you are your own worst critic but dam am I ever guilty of this dismorphia thing... I have such high standards for myself.. nothings perfect and when its close there can me more room for improvemnt always.. its not like im unhappy with the way I look, its just that im not up to par .. its ongoing for me to make improvemnts for the rest of my life.. that will keep me from going insane cuz everday i know i get a lil closer to the way i expect myself to look.

I definetly have a bad case of this , infact everytime i look in the mirror my shlong apears to be to small , i know its just me being hard on myself but i wish it was 12 inches instead of 10.

The concept of muscle dysmorphia is one that I am still trying to decide if it is a valid issue or if it is something concocted by the world of social sciences to catagorize what they dont understand. (After all...why would a person want a 23 inch bicep? ) For example...if a person does triathlons as a hobby, and trains 4 hours a day for it...which is what is required by many triathletes...are they triathletic syndromed because they want to go faster? A sprinter sees herself as slow if she run 11.0 for 100 meters....and she trains 6 days a week, does not have a relationship and only works part time with some faint hope of making a university team (which is not likely) is she sprint dysfunctional? If an artist refuses to show the new dance they choreographed and worked on day and night for a year...are they dance dysfunctional ? Those people are praised as geniuses.

But let it be a bodybuilder...who is trying to perfect their physique and are never truly satisfied ...then its a mental illness?

All sport or hobby done at a serious level seems to have sacrifice attached to it which may effect relationships, jobs and personal perspectives so how is muscle dysmorphia defined? You are 250 and see yourself as small? Well maybe you are compared to the top competitors which is what many in the gym as hobbyist compare themselves to. For example, I always wonder why when people talk about supplement cycles...they start up on what the pros are using who have been bodybuilding 10-20 years, when they have only been bodybuilding 2 years, yet they want to do the routines of the pros and use the same "supplements" Ok...I better go do some cardio..LOL :D
 
i did back when i was BBing and when i competed as a teen, but now i fight so it doesnt matter how i look... i still wanna look goo dand all, but its not priority #1

Like MikeS said, we're the epitome of it. Ask a lay person (or, if you can, remember a time when you were one) and think - is 240lb at 12-14% fat and unGodly out of shape?! Nope, but for us it can be unbearable!

I keep my bodyweight lower than most of you these days (for some other purstuits), so for me it's a finer line... if I drop 5lb I'm skinny (yeah, of course I am) and if I bloat of have a few blow out meals in a weak, I'm a fatso... Sufferer here! IronMike

I think we all have a form of this in one way or another. This is what drivesd us to do what we do on a daily basis. I think this is also one of the reasons bodybuilders are actually pretty successful when they compete becuase what looks like a flaw to us looks pretty damn good to a normal un- baised eye. I have suffered from this when I was younger and also ( I can't remember the name) but it is where if you feel that if you do not work out every day you are going to get weaker.

I think when these types of problems hit, even though we do not consciously see it, maybe we need to take a step back and re-evaluate ourselves from second or third opinons. Sometimes a un-baised eye can help us to see things we though were not there.

Anybody serious has it!

Everybody that i have trained with with or met that is serious in the last 20 years has it. The feeling of never being big or strong enough is what fuel's most to keep going year after year. At 43 I still have it, but now i have other priorities in life that help me keep it in check. I have passed up great opportunities in my life so that i could keep training, but I now realize you need a balance and once you have it you can take some of that drive to be the best and apply it to other area's in your life............
 
The family Doc told my wife a few years ago the she has BDD. He asked how she was doing during her normal check-up. She told him she felt fat as she was off-season at the time (weighing 165 about 13% BF @5'-04"). He told her to do some research on it. Most of these people go to the extreme of surgery to correct what they perseve as a problem.
