for 3 years plus i have been putting up with itchy skin. i have been taking a 10mg tab of loratadine every day to offset it. it gets so bad without the tab i cant control the scratching. i get incredibly, incredibly itchy.

so, to find the cause i started usin different types of shampoos, soaps and detergents. nothing changed.

then i started manipulating my diet. different carbs, no carbs, dairy, no dairy.

still itchy.

then about 2 months ago i tore the muscles in my lower back. i stopped eating protein powder since i couldn't train for almost a month. the whole time i didnt eat powder i didnt itch! i thought it coincidence and didnt think anything of it and started to use powder again, then at christmas i got strep throat, stopped taking it for 5 days and sure enough- no itching.

so, for the past 5 days i have cut out my powder intake completely. i am itch free. this is nuts. who would have thought i would have an allergy to protein powders- and not just one type- i have used several different types/ brands of protein thru the years.

so now i am relegated to using meats for my protein source. today i went to costco and bought $60 worth of sirloin, chicken breast and beef for the slow cooker ( 2 kilo chicken breast, 2 kilo sirloin tip steak, 2 kilo stewing beef) i dunno how long this meat will last- maybe 5 days to a week? talk about a pain in the ass- i found powder so convenient and have come to rely on it greatly.

i'm telling myself i'll make better gains with the whole foods so im not too disappointed with not being able to use powder anymore. :)

ah well. just thought i'd share that with you all. who would have thought anyone could ever have an allergy to protein powder. lol.

same here man, i don't know what it is that's in the protein powder. Every time i take it my mouth and throat itch and tingle uncontrollably no matter what type i use. I had to stop it altogether, i don't want a bad one where my throat closes up on me.

i never suffered from throat itch- it was skin itch that got me- everywhere- back, chest, legs, arms, neck. i can't explain how maddening it was when it hit me. if i didnt take that tab of loratadine every day i would itch so uncontrollably it drove me nuts. it was ridiculous.

so glad i accidentally found it was the powder. it's nice not having to worry about taking that tab or getting crazy itchy. just wish it would have been something else, and not something i had come to rely so heavily on.

Damn man that really sucks. But have you tried something like Optimum Nutritions 100% Natural Whey??? As you stated you don't really know what you are allergic to in the protein powders, but you are not allergic to milk...so perhaps its something artificial in it that your body reacts to. I'd say try the Natural Whey and see if that helps. Good luck though

thanks bro.

i have used thru the past 3 years optimum nutrition whey, allmax isoflex, iso sensation (the isolate and the 83%), and muscle milk and itched off every one. i don't know if it's an ingredient or the powder itself. im thinking the powder itself as after taking so many different types and brands it didnt abate.

maybe im allergic to whey itself? i can eat ice cream, not a big milk drinker but when i use to i didnt itch, and cheese i can eat too. it just seems to the be the powders my body reacts too.

weird.

was it the Natual whey...its different than thier regular whey protein. If thats what you used then I don't know what to tell you...other than stock up on some meat :)

In another post I spoke about this. Dr Serrano has always advised me rotate the type of protein i was taking for this very reason. The same kind over and over and you can develop allergies to it. Try rotating to a different kind..

I like to go 4 weeks TP whey isolate CSm or cold filtered - 4 weeks TP instantized casein, then 4 weeks of TP pea or rice protein...

Chicken breast in a blender with water maybe add some tomatoes or tomatoe juice, tastes vile but will sort you out, your not the first I've heard of reacting to whey, natural whey does work, either that or go with aminos like lba's

My Gf is allergic as well.. She cannot have dairy but even the lactose free whey makes her very sick.. lactaid makes things worse.. She has learned to take egg pro. and it works very well for her.

yep same thing here. i break out in what looks to be heat rash when i consume whey protein, as soon as i stopped takin it my skin never itched and i was able to put on more muscle, imagine that, lol!

YoungNJacked: So what did you switch to? Just natural sources?

Ive had the symptoms described above 2x in the last 3 weeks: like a heat rash all over my chest, it comes and goes, here for a couple days and then gone.

Interesting... i get itchy every night, back, chest and legs. I tried all kinds of body washes, even ones without soap and still itchy. It drives me nuts.
I could have same problem as you..

yup- sounds like it. drives you nuts eh? i know the feeling. it drove me crazy.

weird how many people seem to have the same thing, or different symptoms pointing to the same thing. i'm going to try the natural whey and see what happens.

if natual whey doesn't work then try the egg protein or even casein (although casein is derived from the same thing as whey pretty much)...i totally forgot about egg protein.
