Sucks, doesn't it? I have all these great VHS tapes but there is no HDMI port out of the player, so I can't hook it up to a TV.

Same here, I could bring 'em to the shop to convert to DVD but they charge £30 per tape over here!

purchase a RGB (or AV depending on VCR) to SCART lead and you can connect your VCR to most modern TVs, even the new huge flat screens being made.

TV must have SCART socket.
