There are two. I believe the one 'we' have in mind for a friend is someone who's there for you, someone who cares, someone who will get out of their way for you and respects you. This definition is SO UNREALISTIC that it will only apply to the very FEW.
If a MARRIAGE barely lasts 5yrs on average, why would a FRIENDSHIP last any longer??
People are too different, and those differences are hard to accept, that's why you also wouldnt marry the person.
After having so many so called "FRIENDS", here's my definition of it. FRIEND: JUST SOMEONE I KNOW.
friend |frend| noun a person whom one knows and with whom one has a bond of mutual affection, typically exclusive of sexual or family relations.
• a person who acts as a supporter of a cause, organization, or country by giving financial or other help : join the Friends of Guilford Free Library.
• a person who is not an enemy or who is on the same side : she was unsure whether he was friend or foe.
• a familiar or helpful thing : he settled for that old friend the compensation grant.
• (often as a polite form of address or in ironic reference) an acquaintance or a stranger one comes across : my friends, let me introduce myself.
