last week there was another round of layoffs within my company.

Like other industries, the new home building industry has been experiencing this for about three years now...Can be stressful..I've seen people so nervous and really freaked out for past year that they have aged.

Its not a great feeling to see co-workers/friends and very talented people being let go, due to the slow real estate market ...But I'm still there...I should feel really happy, but its just a job...One thing I've done is prepare myself....I have a back up plan, or plans....I was not ever worried, not because I think It couldnt happen to me, that would mean I've been living under a rock for three years....

I encourage others to think about back up plans, to think about going to school, learning a new skill..There are many opportunities out there, even now. You reallly have to think positive and believe you will be ok...then do something..don't let things happen, make it happen..don't wait for a call, you make the call, don't send your resume out over the internet...Companys are overwhelmed with those, and are not even looking at them.

Make a connection, get in someones face, make yourself stand out...look your best and prepare.

This is my tip for you who are either going through this with your company, or have gone through it...don't worry, don't stress. You are in control of the rest of your life:)

Hi Marilyn, good news to hear you survived.

I went through three rounds here in Japan last year. Frightening to say the least. A lot of good friends are still out of work and some are packing up and heading back home to the UK, Germany, etc. Some just dropped off the radar and no one knows where they are now.

It's tough out there and it's getting tougher all the time. I try to stay positive and adopt the attitude of not worrying abotu what i cannot change...
:)

whew...

I am so glad for you...
the economy has to rebound sooner or later.
Lets hope for sooner!

I'm in the pharmaceutical business

Unlike real estate - which is cyclical - I believe the pharma business is in a permanent decline.

My plan is that if/when this job ends, I will find another industry.

marilyn,

Yeah I went throught his in the funeral industry and lost my job last october, and i was out of work for 6 months, but i survived and i am now with a new company. Those six months were so stressful, because of the whole mortgage thing. I recently found out my new company is being bought out by the company that laid me off!!! They will come in with there own staff and once again i will be laid off. this is expected to happen sometime in the first quater of 2010. So i plan on going back to school and get my nursing degree. Gotta keep moving forward

Good for you Marilyn! Orlando real estate is nuts as is south florida, I remodeled houses in fort myers that were being sold at the same prices they were 19 years ago. Real estate is a tough business.

People rely so much on one thing because they are comfortable there. That is great you have a back up plan..it saves you from agin :)

The best thing you are doing is looking out for you. I use to be a person that would think of others first...now I am more looking out for myself and keeping people on the back burner. NOt really my character, but the past few months has changed me.

good to hear from you all....I'm glad to know you all think positively and staying strong through these times.....I like the idea of trying something new alot and it is in my future plans...even if it means moving from FL....I think it will be 5 years before the market is somewhat adjusted here, and I know other markets that are much better....I'm pretty open to anything, so it's ok...I'll do what I need to do for my family and for me:)

sorry to hear about all the layoffs you've gone through, but the rest of the story sounds good.. I'm glad you have a plan for yourself..we all need to..this is real life and you are choosing to improve yours even if it means changing what you know:)

Yes, I will be changing a lot. I have decided to sell my house, and move down south, and go to school there. I am tired of ny winters, and would like to be closer to the ocean..fishing and sun. I would also like a little slower pace, and in my opinion ..nice people .

My company of 2700ppl in 06' is now a company of 1600ppl. Cuts are hitting everyone's markets domestically now. Save your money, if you think your on the edge of getting cut, plan on getting cut and prepare like Marilyn stated.
The U.S. is in a recession, plan on it getting worse before it gets better. The kenyan president isn't worried about creating jobs, he's worried about raising taxes to fund his social medicine program. We need jobs and more jobs, but we're losing them by the millions. The administration is spinning things so hard, they are talking about jobs saved. Jobs saved?!? You can't even begin to track that, it's a made up phrase. There are no jobs being created, but lost by the millions and there's no end in sight.
I have several ppl I've worked with duringthe last 2yrs of decline who went and bought homes and cars and vacation homes based on their 100,000+ incomes, only to have the income taken away suddenly as they hit the street. Plan for the worst, save and protect your family. Make sure your 401k is defensive unless you can afford the risk.
It's going to get worse before it gets better. Higher taxes during a recession tells us the administration doesn't care about the economy, but only their socialist agenda:s:ar-wars

In the great depression we had the great highway act to get jobs created in LARGE numbers national parks and other ways to create jobs. I do not see why we dont drill off florida and california. not only would it not create alot of jobs but it would help so much with our lack of money problems and our gas prices would go down. This would make food prices go down also. Also it would give hope to our citizens of change.
Florida voted against it though a while back, because it would mess up their coastline views!! Dont get me started on cali poltics its apparent they do not even know how to run their shit, they are always bankrupt and confused (not talking about the citizens no one get mad lol)

Oh almost forgot any1 that talks about enivormental problems and all that stupid stuff and how we should perserve it for our children. try looking into SLANT drilling and why countries are trying to make deals with cuba to drill off their coastal area (to drain oil and natural gas from the florida region reserves) and BP is already getting it in process they have hit oil already. we need our govt to help us out in this area and tell the EPA to simmer down and go hug a tree for awhile lol

I was laid of from Centex Homes over a year ago & went into resale. Not the best time for that & yesterday I had a interview with Ashton Woods Homes that I believe went well...hope so, fingers crossed.

I will keep my fingers crossed.....Centex has been laying people off for a while now..they really dont have many left...Pulte who had more overhead, laid off about 6 of their sales team...Centex really hasnt had enough people all around to lay off in CFL, but now that they are owned by Pulte the whole team is being reviewed...we had to re-interview and send in our resumes...mine has been ready and updated for a long time..they only gave the team a couple days to prepare for that.

Not sure about your area, but Park Square and DR Horton are hiring.

Best of luck:)

Congrads. Isnt it sad that people now are actually grateful to keep their jobs where normally its a burden to get up and go to work. Pisses me off.
