Incredible photo

Yea, got me beat! He had one of the best physiques ever. Balance and muscularity. Hard to find these days.

I was just on youtube last night showing my nephew (who is 17 and new to bodybuilding) all the greats that he will never be able to see compete ...and not because they are old....Flex was the first one i showed him. Then Phil and Keven L. Then ofcourse I had to show him Titus who I never considered one of the great but was always a good friend to me.

I think Flex is his new fav. so I'll def have to show him this pic.

Defintely one of the greats!!!

thats funny...i was on youtube last night as well...i looked at some of his video and i think it was the '98 grand prix where i just honestly could not believe he never won. that picture is amazing!

Do a youtube search for him and I believe his 93' Nationals win. The best conditioning I've ever seen on anyone period.

How did this guy never win the Olympia?

**broken link removed**

the physique is amazing

the man was a nut, i remember reading his book, he was kinda a crybaby... seemed to have quit the temper and tried to kill himself on more than one occasion.... he quotes in his book he took "handfulls of diretics at a time not really careing what and how much he took" the doc told him on more than one occasion that he would need a kidney transpant if he kept taking the amount of gear and diretics he took, but didnt listen to the doc... and pretty much dug his own grave

i belive after reading his book he is the type of "over the top" "anything to win" kind of person that we all seem bash on this board for having no concern for his health... the dude took dbol for his whole professional and amature career, he admits to it! sorry to rant but after reading his book i really lost alot of respect for him, he cheated on his wife, pissed his money away, was an asshole to a lot of fans, trained like a girl(he dosent admit to this but i have heard it on many occasions)

the physique is probably the most impressive we will see in our lives, and fits bodybuilding criteria for olympia status down to the t.... very impressive...

Best bodybuilder of all time

I don't understand why Flex and shawn ray kinda have that fruity voice going on? Anyone else notice that?

i agree 100% with everything you said. it amazes me to see people with SO much potential (not just bbing-wise) who could seemingly accomplish so much more than just a winning physique (in this case) piss away thier gifts. you know whats funny...i saw an interview with him the year he won nationals and he seemed like a genuinely humble person, and i couldnt help but to wonder what happened to change him. i know guys like 2sick, magnum, gavin ect. know a lot of these top tier pros, and im sure at least one of them could at least consider flex somewhat of a friend. i would love to hear thier honest no holds barred opinion of the man, because he really dissapoints me in all but one of the videos ive seen of him.:(

I was amazed at how good he looked when he competed naturally.

If you mean 2002 I think "naturally" meant only with HRT

I see people piss away potential all the time...sports, business, etc. So I guess its not that surprising to read this about him. Still, its hard to believe.

Personally I think even if he didn't have a kidney failure he will never be able to win the Olympia due to the size...probably he had the best physique of all time in terms of proportions and simmetry(however for me the legs was a little smaller paragonated with the rest of the body)...but he wasn't a freak...
look at the last 15 years winners...freaking hughes is not enough to describe their bodies...many people don't think that more size is better for their physiques, but if the goal is win the mr O this is a big mistake...

well.. flex had limitless potential.. but, most that knew him toward the end (and flex admits it now) said he was a head case.. he lied quite a bit (remember a gang with nunchucks and guns tried to hijack his car before the olympia but, he fought them off lol.. was injuried inthe process yet could not varify injury ect) and just went through the motions of training.. talks about taking so many site inject shots in his delts that he would pass out.. ect ect// in his book he talks of needing bodyguards ect ect.. just unreal stuff..
but, he is now happier and staying in the biz.. alot of guys who knew him then and now say he is now a good guy and nice to be around.. so.. in reality, it was just not his time mentally or physically to win the olympia..

True, but even if HRT was on the high end(like 250mg test and 2iu's of GH daily) thats not even a fraction of what everyone else was on. I know we have to take this with a grain of salt, but if that was really true, that was just incredible.

i agree with all you have said but for training like a girl he is one big girl

What the hell...

Found this in an old FLEX, 5/1/04 by Greg Merritt · From publication:

"I never met Mohammed Benaziza or Andreas Munzer--top IFBB pros in the 1990s, both now dead--and I've yet to meet Michael Francois or Don Long or Dennis Newman, all of whom suffered major health problems that dramatically shortened their careers and nearly their lives. I've only once spoken to Orville Burke, weeks before he lapsed into a coma, and have exchanged few words with Flex Wheeler--the best bodybuilder to never win the Olympia and now, like Long, a kidney transplant survivor. Tom Prince is different. Prince is someone I speak with in Gold's Gym, Venice..."

He seemed pretty strong to me!!

I saw one video where he was benching 315 to his neck and he made it look like it was 135.
