Need more EFA's... but they make me sick...???

Hey,

I really struggle to take in enough EFA's, but many of the oils make me sick. By sick I mean, abdominal discomfort, gas, irregular bowel movements, heart burn, etc.

It took me forever to find a fish oil cap I can take, however I can only take about 1200mg a day. 1 dose above that, and I have a day in the bathroom.

I try to eat a serving of sardines each day also (sometimes in water, sometimes in olive oil), but that gets to me also, so I need to take a break. I bought smart balance fat free, lactose free milk with Omega 3's added, and also try to eat omega 3 eggs (like eggland's best)... for an additional boost. Their amounts are minimal though.

I currently use the Nature Made Odorless Enteric Coated "no fish burps" capsules. I must have gone through 10 or 15 different brands to find the one that works.

What other sources or transport methods (liquid, powder, capsule, gel cap, etc) would you recommend to get more in?

Any help or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
 
How about whole food?

What about eating raw nuts and or seeds? Almonds, walnuts, cashews, peanuts, etc. Yes, they have carbs so you have to account for that.

Also, have you tried eating avocados, olives, etc?

There are minimal amounts of EFAs (omega 3 and omega 6) in nuts, olive oil, etc.

A good source of omega 6 is evening primrose oil, or borage oil. Both come in capsule form.

For omega 3 try eating salmon if you don't handle fish oil caps well, or try Carlon's fish oil (it's a liquid, you drink it by the tbsp instead of swallowing caps).

Try Udo's Choice Oil Blend or just your own blend of (extra virgin) olive oil, flaxseed oil and some nut oil (eg. macademia, hazelnut, almond) and use it to make a salad dressing. The general formula for salad dressing is 4 parts oil to 1 part vinegar (or lemon juice), season to taste and dress your salad. This is a palatable way to get your EFAs (and other nutrients).

It is unusual that you have trouble digesting oils. Is your gallbladder ok? You should check your stool to see if it contains undigested fat (visible as droplet of oil in the water) and/or is pale and clay like. If you have a fatty and/or clay like stool then you may have bile flow problems.
 
i have ibs and i have the same probelms,i have to limit my fat intake to about 10gs per serving .fish oil caps also upset me but i think that is the glycerin in the caps themselves
