well...as much as it pains me to watch these damn shows...i caught a show tonight on National Geographic. it was about killer whales and how they hunt. We all know whales are mammals and have HUGE brains and really know how to use their brains so to speak. well this program was about some rare footage of a killer whale attack. I guess its extremely rare to see such an attack. 3 tour boats were out and about and radio each other to surround the attack and everyone filmed it and watched it. it was a group of 12 killer whales that strategicly(sp) planned and executed an attack on a giant grey whale and her calf.
The killers sent messages toeach other and they 'grouped' together...kinda like at a meeting point, then went out together in search of this mother and her calf! when they got to them, they surrounded the two and for over 4 hours straight slowly engaged in a plan to seperate the calf from the mom.
THey did this by half of the group distracting the mom while the other 6 basically swam full speed at the calf and rammed it..causing internal bleeding and extreme bruising. Throughout the whole time you could see the mom trying to fend off the killers by raising her 400 lbs tail and slammin it on top of them, she would also swim under her calf and raise it out of water so that they couldnt ram it...think about this...the mom weighs TONS already, so she has to support herself along with her calf on top of her stomach while she is upside down in the water..also, they cant breath under water so she has to hold her breath while taking shots from the killer whales as they ram her too! this went on for 4 hours!
THen the mom actually figures out taht killers cant hunt in shallow water so this whole time she pushes her calf in b/t rams towards shallow water! once they got to 60 ft, the killers had to retreat...but the calf was extremely hurt. it was very very sad to watch and really disturbed me to watch it, but it was cool to see nature at its finest. Ppl on the boat at first were excited but when they saw how much the mom went through and how bad the calf was hurt EVERYONE was crying. one boat actually left early...they couldnt bare to watch anymore.
maybe some of you caught this on tv as well. i just had to share this with you guys b/c all of this Vick/animal abuse talk has me thinkiing a lot about animals lately and i find myself watching APL a lot more now too...LOL.
